As I wrote to Fahan families yesterday, it is becoming more and more difficult, if nigh on impossible, to ignore the daily news that comes to us from the mainland about the struggles many communities are having in attempting to quell the Delta variant of COVID-19. In Tasmania it would seem that we are well prepared to tackle a lockdown should this be required with high rates of vaccination, a strong sense of community and a determination to protect the most vulnerable.
Here at Fahan, we are taking the stance that whilst we hope to never need to use it, it is better to be prepared than not, and so our Senior Leaders are meeting regularly to discuss any changes to advice or updates received like the one from Premier Gutwein last week. We met as one staff this week to discuss what a lockdown at Fahan might look like from the myriad angles we must consider, but most importantly: the wellbeing of our Community; compliance, health and safety; teaching and learning, and the important role technology plays. As a result of these deliberations and planning we have sent home to parents and carers this document that outlines what a lockdown might look at Fahan if it is ever required – all the while keeping our fingers are crossed, and our prayers said that it isn’t.
As well, we are working with TAS Health to facilitate the government vaccination program of our young people in Tasmania. We await firm information from the authorities who will run all aspects of this program, and what a blessing this opportunity is. I speak regularly to colleagues in NSW and Victoria who are enduring long school lockdowns at the moment and this kind of program would be so welcome there and change their landscape entirely. When we receive the information packs from TAS Health, we will ensure families are notified as quickly as possible and I thank Deputy Principal, Jack Machin, and our Health and Safety Officer, Steve Harris for the work they are doing in this space.
On another note entirely, you may remember that we recently advertised for a Director of Rowing to lead the Fahan School Rowing Program into the 2021/22 season.
I am very pleased to announce that we have appointed Mr Steve Lambert to this position to commence this week. Steve has extensive knowledge and expertise in this space, and this, along with his approach, will ensure a strong and vibrant continuation of the development of rowing skills and culture that has been built up over many years. We welcome Steve wholeheartedly to the staff of Fahan School, and we are very excited to work with him in this role.
As well, our rowing program will be very well supported into the new season by two teachers-in-charge for Seniors and Juniors by Jo Banks-Smith and Sophie Baxter respectively. Their roles are to provide additional coordination and care for the 70 girls that have expressed an interest in the program for the 2021/2022 season. Jo’s and Sophie's knowledge of rowing, of the intricacies of the program, and their already outstanding relationships with our girls, will ensure that the girls who choose to give so much of their time and energy to row for our School are supported in every sense.
As a School we are very grateful for the many coaches, volunteers and supporters who invest countless hours in support of the program which punches well above its weight. We are thankful to all volunteers, however this year we wish to thank Andrew Edwards particularly. Andrew has a long and highly valued history of supporting rowing at Fahan. His guidance, expertise, and work to commence the season has been extensive and is very much appreciated. Thank you, Andrew. Thank you, all.
Our Rowing Team for the season 2021/2022 is as follows:
Coaches
- Sam Manson and Chris Parnham – Open
- Andrew Wirtz - U16
- Jasmine Campbell-Jones and Sasha Gregg - U15
- John Withers U14
- Sophie Baxter U13
Assistants
- Sara Gates- Matthews
- Lilly Ansell
- Miranda Jones
- Emily Farquer
Finally, I am delighted to share with parents and carers an opportunity to hear from a nationally and internationally renowned expert in drug and alcohol research and training. Paul Dillon has been working in the area of drug education for more than 25 years. Through his own business, Drug and Alcohol Research and Training Australia (DARTA), he has been contracted by many agencies and organisations across the country to give regular updates on current drug trends within the community. He continues to work with many school communities across the country to ensure that they have access to good quality information and best practice drug education. Paul is a regular speaker here in Tasmania (when he can get in!) and I had arranged a booking for him to speak at Fahan pre-COVID.
I strongly encourage you to consider his upcoming webinar for parents and carers titled ‘Young people, alcohol and other drugs 2021: What do parents need to know?’ on Thursday 16 September at 7:00-8:30pm (AEST). Cost: $25 plus GST. I can guarantee that you will learn much, and you will take away some fantastic strategies to facilitate conversation with your children. The webinar will examine current drug trends amongst school-based young people, including vaping and the online sale of drugs via social media apps. Further details and registration can be found here.
With every best wish,
Penny Curran-Peters
Learning Through Play in the ELC
Our Kinder to Year 2 girls always love exploring our beautiful grounds, no matter the weather or season. They are engaged, imaginative and are always looking for new things to challenge themselves and their friends. Hiding in secret bush-caves, staring intently at little creatures and creating culinary concoctions in the sandpit are just a few of the inspired games our girls play. Inter-class games of soccer, totem tennis or mushroom tag are often played on the Junior School Green, with the air filled with screams of excitement and encouragement. It is always a delight to see the different ways our grounds are viewed by younger eyes and spending time outside with them is always a pleasure.
Mrs Sophie Baxter

Learning about Collagraphs
Year 8 students created collages of circus imagery and turned them into collagraphs, which is an intaglio form of printmaking. They scratch the drawings into the shellac coated strawboard and then print the block by rubbing ink into the etched lines and pressing the block through an etching press which prints the lines onto the paper.

Learning about Science Week
Last week we celebrated Science Week with the rest of the country. The theme this year was Food: Different by Design. We started the week off with an exploding watermelon demonstration on the stage in the TM Hall. A total of 314 rubber bands were applied around the middle of ‘Walter the Watermelon’, at which point it burst open. The elastic potential energy contained in the stretched rubber bands was too much for the watermelon’s supporting force. Tiger Somerville made the closest guess, with 316 rubber bands. Following this, we played a giant Kahoot! with a food theme. The game was hotly contested, with some tough questions. For morning tea, the senior staff were treated to a COVID-themed lemon and coconut cupcake with a squirt of lemon curd delivered in a syringe.
On Tuesday, we had a Science Assembly in which we zoomed an entomologist called Skye, who runs a business in Western Sydney called ‘Circle Harvest’, specialising in producing edible insect products. We learnt all about the benefits of eating insects, including their health benefits (high in protein and micronutrients, vitamins and fatty acids). Insects contain three times the amount of Omega 3 as spinach, twice as much calcium as milk and more iron than spinach as well as all 20 amino acids! Insect protein also takes significantly less water and energy to produce the same amount of protein compared with beef, and of course emit far less methane in the process. We also conducted a brief experiment to test the effect of Miracle Berry tablets on our sense of taste. Three volunteers ate a miracle berry tablet, then whilst blindfolded, ate a segment of lemon without noticing a sour taste. The miracle berry changes the way the taste buds taste – sour foods are perceived as sweet. We also congratulated two girls on their outstanding achievement in the Australian Society for Medical Research Quiz for Students – Mia Peatling achieved 1st place in the Year 11/12 section, and Jemima Baker achieved 2nd place in the Year 7/8 section.
On Wednesday, Mr Goodwolf fired up the woodfired pizza oven and students from Years 7, 8, 11 and 12 were able to make their own pizzas with a twist – they had to have insects sprinkled on top. The packets of insects (mealworms and crickets from Circle Harvest) ran out quickly, and the girls were surprised at how good the pizzas tasted. They also snacked on the delicious insect protein corn chips. Some girls have decided to buy insect protein and make it a part of their diet! A win for Science Week!
On Thursday, in Year 8 we performed a sheep’s heart dissection to conclude our studies of the human body. The girls were able to put their theory into practice – identifying the heart strings, valves, atria, ventricles, major blood vessels and the coronary arteries, and linking the structure of these parts to the functioning of the mammalian heart.
On Friday, Year 7 and Year 4 went to the Festival of Bright Ideas. The Year 7s enjoyed programming robots, building solar powered lights to send to developing countries, painting with natural pigments and cuddling bunnies and goats. The Year 4s also enjoyed building the solar powered lights which was a great follow-on from their great work fundraising for Light Up Vanuatu. They then listened to a thought-provoking talk from Bonorong, about the precarious position that our native wildlife are in – both in the aquatic and terrestrial environments. Finally, the Year 4s cycled through some mini-activities, including presentations from Fishcare, Tassie Young Scientists and TMAG. At lunchtime, we ran an Escape Room Challenge in the Science lab for Years 7 and 8 teams. The Escape Room winners were Ruby Squires, Molly Porter, Roisin Grosvenor and Amelie Nelson from Year 7. Our thanks to everyone for your contributions and enthusiasm during Science Week!

Learning about Lino Prints
Year 7 students have begun to finalise their colour reduction lino prints of fish. They created a beautiful mobile for the foyer in the Senior School of their watercolour fish. After the watercolour drawings, the girls embarked on the lino printing. The process is one of colour reduction, and each print is overlayed over the previous colour to build a brightly coloured image. The imagery has to be carefully carved out with a sharp lino tool and then printed in oil-based inks. It’s a fantastic medium, albeit complex, and it enables the students to create really superb images.

Learning about Children's Book Week
Old Worlds, New Worlds, Other Worlds
On Friday 27 August, students from Pre-Kinder to Year 6 celebrated Book Week with great enthusiasm. CBCA Book Week is Australia’s longest-running children’s festival, celebrating its 75th year in 2021. In Library this term, Junior School students have spent time reading and studying books nominated for this year’s Children’s Book Council Award. Students talked about their thinking and how they felt after reading the stories. Students also made connections through discussion, writing and art.
We celebrate Book Week because books are a big part in people’s lives. Chloe (Year 6)
It’s a special week to celebrate books. Min (Year 1)
The book, Cicada by Shaun Tan, makes me feel like I am not alone. There are other people that are like you. Like, you’re the same. Keira (Year 5)
Discussing ‘truths’ in stories, Maya (Year 5) observed: “You can’t just go and ask someone, and take that as the truth. You actually have to ask some more people to find out the actual true story!”
I am so excited, Book Week is my favourite week of the year! Well actually Christmas and my birthday are my favourite weeks, but Book Week is a very close third! Molly (Year 6)
This year’s extraordinary cake was once again made by Marvellous Creations. We would like to thank parents and all Junior School staff for their support of this fabulous event. Researcher, Margaret Merga, in Reading Engagement For Tweens and Teens, writes: “There is something about listening to a well-read book that can have a transformative effect and transport the listener into a different world.”
We hope you can share a book or story with your children and enjoy travelling to old, new or other worlds, along with them. A full selection of photos can be viewed on our website here.

Spirit - Years 9 and 10 Camps
With the uncertainty surrounding interstate travel in 2021, it was decided that students in Years 9 and 10 would all participate in Tasmanian-based activities. Students had the choice of four different experiences: The Overland Track, Three Capes Walk, Corinna, and Mount Cameron/Ben Lomond. The Three Capes Track was a popular choice and we ended up sending two groups, one group to Corinna and one group to Mount Cameron/Ben Lomond.
The Outdoor Education Program is aligned to the Values of Spirit and Learning and focuses on Strategic Plan pillar of Our Girls – Learning and Wellbeing. The program supports the Positive Education Program by providing holistic experiences carefully constructed to improve positive emotions, engagement, relationships, meaning, accomplishment and health.
Each trip provided an opportunity for students to participate in activities that helped build confidence, regulate emotions, problem-solve, enhance relationships with peers and build trust and connection, provide a connection to nature, and improve self-efficacy. After the camp students reflected on their experiences, highlighting the strengths they used and the challenges they faced throughout the week. Here is a sample of their responses:
Elina Otto (Year 10) - I went to the Corinna camp, in northwest Tasmania. I loved kayaking and seeing the reflection of the Tarkine on the water because it was exactly like a mirror. The walk to Mount Donaldson was tough going up but it was great fun coming down. I learned that only 200m of the Tarkine forest is protected on each side of the river. Everyone was a superstar on our camp and it was brilliant.
Anabelle Zeeman (Year 10) - last week I attended the Three Capes trip leaving on Tuesday morning. The thing I enjoyed most were the views. The thing I found most challenging was having to eat the risotto because it was so hard to cook and did not taste too good! I learnt all about the nature and history of that part of Tasmania. The superstars in our groups were a lot of people but particularly Dr Stewart because he packed so quickly as he came last minute and made it possible for us to go on the camp.
Grace Hooper (Year 10) - I went on the second Three Capes camp and it was super fun! I loved the views and hanging our heads over the cliffs. I found walking the hills really hard with a pack but the walking got easier every day which was good. I loved having the little booklet with all the info about each stop because I learnt so much about the environment around us. I loved learning about Tasman Island because it looked impossible to get there. My highlight was stargazing on the helipad and seeing the sunrise from the helipad too. I loved doing it with all my friends and it was actually easier than I thought it would be. Sienna and Dr Stewart were superstars because we didn't think Sienna would make it and Dr Stewart packed his bags in such a short time and only forgot his head torch!
Lexie Valta (Year 9) - I went to the Mt Cameron and Ben Lomond camp. What I enjoyed about the camp was that I made new friends in Year 10 who I got to know better. Not having phones for some people was hard but for me, personally, I didn't really mind as I felt better without all the stress. I did miss listening to music a lot though. I probably wouldn't last without music for more than two days. A challenge at Ben Lomond was going up on the ski slope and using the T-lifts. I fell off twice because you have to let it pull you along and up the snowy hills. Don't go on T-lifts if you are not prepared to fall off!. I also had to avoid bushes and rocks to get back down to the lift. I learnt interesting facts about Mt Cameron. We played some rope games and made our path with planks (Megatron) which included teamwork. A superstar on my camp was Esme because she brightened up the cabin or room when she was there.
Airlie Pyke (Year 10) - I went to Mount Cameron and Ben Lomond. I really enjoyed skiing and I definitely made lots of memories that I will never forget.
Olivia Sampson (Year 10) - I really enjoyed the Three Capes camp as it was great fun and challenging. We got to walk on cliff edges and look over them. The heights were exhilarating, especially on top of The Blade. The weather was really nice and I had packed a perfect amount of snacks. The actual walking was quite fun, except for the first day of 4km and the big hills on the second day. The stops along the way where we got to learn about the environment and surrounding area were very appreciated.
Jazmin Kempnich (Year 9) - I went on the Corinna camp. Although it was freezing cold and there were leeches and it rained every day, it was really pretty scenery, and the river was gorgeous.
Charlee Hunt (Year 9) - I went on the Mt Cameron and Ben Lomond camp. It was lots of fun and we made lots of memories that I will never forget. We learnt how to work together and to be there for each other.
Tess McDonough (Year 10) - I went on the first group for the Three Capes walk. I mainly enjoyed the views and scenery and the cabins we got to stay in. Sometimes walking for a long time was a struggle and I was challenged to get to the end but it was fun to walk with my friends. I learnt a lot about the local area and about Port Arthur. We were also taught about orchids by the camp ranger. All of my friends were superstars because they made me enjoy the experience a whole lot more and we made many memories.
Emma Thompson (Year 10) - I went to the second Three Capes camp. I really liked the views, really great cabins, the nice weather, watching the sunsets and stargazing. Walking with the backpack was a bit of a struggle on the first and second day but the third and last day were no problem. I really enjoyed the day walk on day three because it was quite flat, the views were nice, we didn't have our big pack on the whole day and the weather felt like summer. The information booklet that we got at the start was really interesting. I learnt many things like short-tailed shearwater birds can dive up to 20 metres. I thought everyone was a superstar, particularly Sienna, as well as Milly, Lara, Ella, Emily, Olivia, Poppy and Georgia for powering through up the front, Grace, Anabelle, Sienna, Abbey and Charlotte for keeping the walks entertaining and Dr Fitzpatrick, Mitch and Dr Stewart for putting up with us.
Sienna Woodford (Year 10) - I went on the Three Capes camp in the second group. We left on the Tuesday and got back on the Friday. What I enjoyed the most about camp were the views and scenery. It was beautiful there and very inspiring. I also enjoyed hanging out and walking with all my friends and chilling out at the very cool cabins. My favourite memory was on the helipad on the second night where we stargazed and watched the sunrise and sunsets. What challenged me was definitely walking up those massive steps and the intense hills. My legs are very short and everyone else is very tall so I was struggling to keep up. It was very funny, but I did like the challenge. What I learnt about Three Capes and Tasmania was how different and fast the environment can change throughout the walk, and how the Three Capes Walk has a majority of the Tasmanian wildlife in the area which I thought was really interesting and I loved to learn about the animals and plants along the walk. I think everyone was a superstar in their own special way, like how Emma pulled me up the hill with my stick, how Charlotte helped with the cooking each night, how Abbey and Ella were so caring, and how everyone was so funny and we all had a great time and made so many memories. I am also a superstar because even though I was struggling a bit, I still pulled through and enjoyed the walk.
Ella Atkins (Year 10) - I attended the the Three Capes Walk with group two that left on Tuesday. I enjoyed stargazing from the helipad at the Munro Hut on night two. This also accompanied an amazing view of Mount Fortescue and Cape Pillar which we walked on the last night of camp. Having to ration foods was my biggest challenge. I learnt a lot about the vegetation along this part of Tasmania, and the history behind the area. I think the superstar of the camp was Sienna, she was always smiling and motivating others to continue to give it their all and do their best.
Ava Allanby (Year 10)- I went on the Three Capes Walk that left on Monday. I enjoyed the views of the trip and getting to sleep in a real bed. Another thing I loved was sunrise from the helipad. The walk was probably my biggest challenge at certain points. I learnt a lot about Tasman Island and who used to live there. Nobody lives there anymore! My superstars were my friends because they made the experience fun and a lot less of a challenge.
Evie Banks-Smith (Year 10) - I was in the first group for the Three Capes Walk. I really enjoyed all the scenery, views and cabins and walking up the blade. The long walks were challenging at times but it was fun to walk with friends. I learnt a lot about the area we were walking in and what plants and animals to look out for. I think my friends were superstars because they made the experience lots of fun!
Lila Wallis (Year 9) - I went to Corinna and Waratah. I enjoyed stargazing with my friends on the jetty and kayaking on the Pieman River up to Lovers Falls. We had some very scary experiences with leeches including Mrs Hayes getting a leech on her bottom lip in the early hours of the morning! The water was so still, you could use it as a mirror. The thing that challenged me was not having a towel, which was very annoying. I learnt about a colour-changing plant at Lovers Falls which turned a vibrant purple when you put pressure on it. The superstars on my camp were Prue, Keala, Georgie, Jazmin and Liv because they were all such good sports and were very fun to be around which made my camp even better!

Spirit - Q&A with Mr Thomas Blackwood, Manager of ICT Services and Infrastructure
![](https://fahanschool.schoolzineplus.com/_file/media/1545/thomas_blackwood_copy.jpg)
What made you choose your career?
I have had a love of computers since I was a young child where I quickly became fascinated by how they worked and the myriad functions they could perform. I got my very own computer in 2004 when I was in 7th grade and would build my first PC in 2007 with the help of a good friend. After being accepted into Georgia State University I admittedly struggled to finally pick a major, being torn between Microbiology and Computer Science. In the end I went with Computer Science as I wanted to fully understand how these wonderous machines actually worked. Three years later I got an internship with the Cybersecurity firm Dell Secureworks which solidified my career decision and set me down the path of Information Technology.
Of what are you most proud?
My new house! It is the culmination of over five years of hard work and planning and will be ready January 2022.
What do you enjoy most about working at Fahan?
The students. Preparing the next generation to build a brighter and better world is, in my opinion, one of the most important jobs someone can do. Working in an all-girls school makes my job even more important in that I need to show our students the power of technology and plant the seeds that will allow some of our students to go on and have careers in Computer Science to help reduce the gender gap in my industry.
How would you describe yourself in one sentence?
I am a curious-minded individual who always seeks to learn how and why things work down to the smallest detail.

Rowing
The Rowing Information Evening was held on Wednesday 25 August. It was wonderful to see so many enthusiastic students and parents attend. If you were unable to attend and would like more information, please contact me.
Sports Training
A reminder to everyone to adhere to the ‘Agreement for students playing Sport in the Senior School’. This was part of the EdSmart notice that all girls in Years 7 – 12 received when they signed up to play sport for Term 3.
Sport is a vibrant part of our School’s culture and we promote an enjoyable and inclusive atmosphere in all sporting ventures. We have many volunteers who coach, manage, umpire and assist teams and we appreciate the time they give to sport at Fahan. Among other points, the ‘Agreement for students playing Sport in the Senior School’ includes that students will attend training and always let the coach or team manager know if they are unable to attend. It also states that students will attend all games unless there is a valid reason why they cannot (where they will inform the coach or team manager). It is wonderful to see most students follow this part of the agreement and this is evident in their results and the improvement in their chosen sport(s). It is important for all team players to remember this, as being part of a team means that we rely on each other, work together and enjoy the sport with everyone giving their best.
Term 4 Sport
The Edsmart notice for Term 4 sport will be sent to all Senior School students shortly. Below are the sports and their start dates in Term 4:

Community - P&F raise a record amount!
On Saturday 14 August, we rolled out the red carpet at the RYCT and held an amazing Hollywood-themed evening to a sold-out crowd comprised of parents from all year levels, staff and Fahan community friends. There was incredible enthusiasm for the theme in the room and the costumes were fantastic. Congratulations again to best dressed winners and to the most unusual.
We raised a record amount of money for the School’s wish list items, around $35,000. Our Outdoor Education team have already used the funds raised from the dinner to purchase new rock climbing equipment which the girls put to the test this morning in Freuhauf - look at those smiles!
We thank all our parents who provided prizes to the live and silent auctions and congratulations to all the winners. Our California Wine Pull proved to be a hit and will return at the next event! Thank you again to all our Sponsors who helped make the event such a success.
Many thanks to Tony Bradfield and his sidekick Shawn who made us laugh, cringe and bid high and often or, as we say in Spanish, puja alta puja a menudo and thank you for supporting Fahan. For a small school we pack quite a punch.
We are looking forward to our Made in Tasmania Father's Day Stall for the Junior School girls this week. Finally, I am excited to announce we will again be holding our popular Father’s Day Draw next Thursday. The School has provided the names of each child’s father, guardian or special person to be automatically included in the draw and we are looking forward to sharing more information about this with you next week!
Thank you!

Community - Winter Sleep Out
Last week, 17 brave and compassionate students from Years 7, 8, 11 and 12 (and two equally brave teachers) spent the night in cold conditions as part of the Winter Sleep Out. This was to raise awareness about the issue of homelessness. The girls slept on the deck in sleeping bags on cardboard boxes all night, and experienced a snippet of what our most vulnerable people go through every single night. We raised money for Colony 47 in the process. The girls are keen to run the Winter Sleep Out again next year and look forward to having an even greater contingent of girls participate.
Blanket Donations
We are having a blanket drive and are calling for any donations of blankets (in clean and good condition) that we can also donate to homeless shelters. Please drop these off to the box in Reception.
