Unbelievably, this newsletter marks the end of Term 3! Our Junior School girls were delighted to welcome their grandparents for a very special virtual assembly today and the beautiful messages and feedback we have received has been wonderful.
One of the most rewarding projects we have been working on over this term is the Capital Master Plan, and I would particularly like to thank the parents who came along to meet the team from Bence Mulcahy who have been working with us to create this plan. It was wonderful to hear your responses to the question, “What do you imagine would improve the girls’ education or experience at Fahan School?". The answers were many and varied, and all with the girls at the very heart of the ideas that were proposed. As well, it was a great opportunity for parents to hear about the process so far, and to understand how closely the aims of the Capital Master Planning Process are following the values articulated by students, staff, parents and alumni.
From the commencement of the project, the creation of the Master Plan has upheld the School’s values and culture, in particular:
- Fahan School was established on this site so that students could enjoy ‘the long view’ to the river. This original principle is still valued even today, and any new buildings that may be considered are to do the same.
- Fahan has a very welcoming feel throughout the whole campus. This quality is to be embedded in the consideration of any new works.
- All members of the Fahan Community love the gardens, the beauty of the campus and being outside but overwhelmingly, desire the outdoor areas to be enhanced and improved. At Fahan students have freedom and are trusted to make their own choices. They have agency to enquire, be curious, and explore. Students play actively in the gardens, can climb trees and play in the creek and sport is important. Outdoor spaces are to support a range of active and sporting activities. The gardens are to be both beautiful and robust and varied. Outdoor areas are a high priority for the Master Plan.
- Fahan values its smallness, which enables a focus on the individual student and at the same time, fosters connection between the whole school, K-12. There is mutual respect, and a sense that everyone is on the one team. The Master Plan will maintain the school’s quality of smallness and support and enhance connections within and between buildings, consider proximity of buildings and improve accessibility.
- Fahan has a history of innovation. The Master Plan is to build on this legacy, be innovative and creative.
- The School has many gatherings and traditions throughout the calendar year for students, staff and the broader community including the Nateby Club, parents and friends and alumna. The Master Plan is to consider places for these events and accessibility.
As this exciting and future-focussed process continues, there will be further opportunities for students and parents to be updated and engaged in various aspects and we look forward to sharing more with you in the last term of 2021.
Term 4 commences for students on Monday 11 October and we look forward to welcoming them back after a much-needed two-week break at home. The holiday breaks through each year are a great opportunity for all of us to change routines a little, and reconnect with family after 10 weeks of busyness and movement. I thank all Fahan families for their continued support of the School, and wish you a safe and happy holiday break.
With every best wish,
Penny Curran-Peters
Learning about Witches and Wizards at Hedgelands
Year 1 and Year 2 girls have been exploring the magical world of wizards and witches during Term 3. Awesome figures started to appear out of clay cones. Brooms, cats and other magical paraphernalia appeared. Their faces were often scarier than any real life witch could possibly be, but luckily some girls decided to include a few big hearted friendly characters into our witch and wizard army.
Most wizards did change into witches which were slightly upsetting as I was quite keen on creating some huge magical beards with the girls. The 40 strong army of witches was bisqued and students are glazing the works at the moment.
Awesome job girls!

Learning about Kites
On Thursday 16 September, Zara's mum, Misty, joined us in a collaborative art project with Kindergarten and Prep creating kites. Misty shared the story, My Two Blankets, written and illustrated by Irena Kobald and Freya Blackwood. She talked about the universal language of making kites as well as the plight of families who are forced to leave their homes and find a new country to live in. Sometimes, learning a new language can be challenging and making friends can be hard. The book, My Two Blankets, is beautifully illustrated and may be borrowed from the TM Library.
We also read the story, Kites, by Simon Mole and illustrated by Oamul Lu. This book talked about the power of kites helping to make new friendships when in a new city.
In the Art Studio Hedgelands, Mr Goodwolf has been working with the Kindergarten and Prep students as they work collaboratively to make kites.
Thank you, Misty, for making the time to join us and sensitively introduce this important issue.

Learning Through Performance
On 15 September, our Year 8 Drama class staged two lively performances of William Shakespeare’s The Comedy of Errors. The girls entertained the audiences with this clever comedy about separated family and mistaken identity. The talented cast performed brilliantly and their enthusiasm was impressive, as was the hilarious slapstick humour and entertaining plot twists. Below are some thoughts from the students:
The play was a great experience and I really enjoyed doing it. As it was my last play for Drama, I really gave it everything I had and made the most of the opportunity. It was fun to work with my friends and build the play up to the performance day when we all did a really good job. - Felicity Barling
I love doing Drama and I thought this play was so enjoyable. I especially enjoyed learning how to stage fight! I personally thought that all of the characters were well chosen, my character came to life as the play continued and I gave it my all with every performance. My favourite part of putting plays together are the dress rehearsal, where you really get an idea of what the play will look like as it comes together. - Estella Manson
I really enjoyed performing The Comedy Of Errors. We had been working on it for a while, and our hard work paid off with some great performances. It was a fantastic experience as Ms Best arranged for Drama specialists to come in and teach us about different aspects of drama and acting, such as how to perform a fight scene. Overall, I really enjoyed performing with my friends and learning more about Shakespeare. - Zara Marino
In addition, on 13 September, selected Year 8 students participated in a Drama intensive workshop that included a puppet workshop with Mel King, who has worked with Terrapin Puppet Theatre, and an Acting For Camera class with Sara Cooper from Cooper Screen Academy.

Learning about Reading Hour
![](https://fahanschool.schoolzineplus.com/_file/media/2156/screen_shot_2021_09_14_at_9.34.33_am.png)
This week, students from Kindergarten to Year 2 discussed the theme, Stories That Matter, as part of the Australian Reading Hour.
Originally launched by Australian libraries and library associations for the National Year of Reading in 2012, the Australian Reading Hour began as an event for all Australians to set aside one hour on one day to read – whatever they wanted, wherever they were located, and however they chose to read. https://australiareads.org.au/australian-reading-hour/
Year 5 students reflected:
All stories matter.
A story that I thought was important was The War that Saved My Life. It was very sad, but it had hope and showed perseverance.
The story of Malala.
A story that is important to me is Greta Thunberg’s story.
Anne Frank’s Diary.
Prep students commented:
Be You was an important book because it is about your feelings.
Sea Lion Rescue because it was in the zoo and they were saving animals.
A book that is important to me and my family is cooking books so we can learn how to cook.
I’ve got a book in my family which I sometimes read in the night and it is special because I got it when I was little and I was so happy that I even started to read it. It is called Dear Zoo.
Language books because Chinese culture is important.
We all agreed that ‘Stories Matter’ and hope you can share an hour of reading with someone in your family soon.

Learning About the Botanical Gardens
Year 2 had a fabulous excursion exploring the Botanical Gardens and having a play amongst the beautiful spring flowers in the sunshine. We enjoyed peering closely at flowers and plants, trying to identify certain parts and spot anything interesting. We also enjoyed hunting for things on the Friends of the Royal Tasmanian Botanical Gardens ‘seek and find’ list.
During morning tea, we had a duck who was very keen to join us and afterwards we headed off in four different directions and looked at flowers and trees. It was hot so we begged Mrs Baxter to buy icypoles! Luckily for us, Violet and Claire’s mum’s ducked to the supermarket and we all cheered when they got back! They were delicious.
Mrs Sophie Baxter, Bonnie and Mia.

Learning about Camp
From 20 – 22 September 2021, Year 4 headed off to camp at Southport. For many girls, this was their first camp. The girls supported each other beautifully throughout the challenges of being away from home. There was a hefty amount of rain on the first couple of days. They did a wonderful job participating fully and wholeheartedly in all the activities. These activities included a walk to Duckhole Lake through an aptly named rain forest, singing on the Hastings Cave tour, bushcraft, beach games and fossicking for gemstones at Lune River.
I was in team Wallabies and we had an amazing experience. We went for a bushwalk and my feet were soaking wet. When we got back from bushwalking, we saw a leech on the carpet but it was not very disgusting. At dinner we ate spaghetti bolognese and it tasted like five star gourmet food. Camp was awesome! Learning about the Female Factory
On Thursday 23 October, the Year 5 classes went to the Female Factory in South Hobart. The Cascades Female Factory Historic Site is the most significant site associated with female convicts in Australia. It is listed as one of the 11 convict sites that form the Australian Convict Sites World Heritage property. It represents an exceptional example of the forced migration of convicts. It is also an example of global developments associated with punishment and reform.
Although the Cascades Female Factory Historic Site is temporarily closed to commence construction of a new History and Interpretation Centre, we managed to hear a lot about the site from our guide, Flo. After listening to Flo talk about the daily life of the many female convicts, we walked up to the Cascade Gardens to watch the one-woman performance of ‘The Proud and The Punished’, which is centred around the life of Sarah Mason.
Sarah was a petty criminal who rails against the system of punishment and redemption inside the prison walls at the Female Factory. Her story is a compilation of historical accounts of women at the female factory who experienced incredible hardships; assignment, pregnancy and punishment. This journey shared with us the strength of character that many of the women at the female factory had, also their ability to retain hope and to rise above the unforgiving hardship which surrounded them.
Quotes from the girls:
“We learnt a lot about female convict history – what types of crimes they were sent to Van Diemans Land for.” - Ruby Williamson
“We went to the Cascades Gardens to watch the play. We learnt about the different classes that the convicts were put in according to their behaviour.”- Alex Smith
“I found it very interesting to find out about their life as a convict – how the female convicts were treated.”- Ava McIndoe
“I enjoyed the play because it mostly taught us about how the female convicts worked in the factory” - Bailey Mellefont

Learning about the Readers' Cup
On Monday, six students from Years 5/6 attended the annual Readers' Cup event held at The Friends School. The hard work and dedication shown by the girls was acknowledged by taking first place.
The aim of Readers' Cup is to encourage all children - not just 'good readers' to read, and to enjoy what they read. It is also a way to reward enthusiastic readers in the context of a team activity.
The Readers' Cup in Southern Tasmania comprises two elements; a memory test about the six books read by the team and a creative challenge in which each team interprets an aspect or aspects of one or more of the books and presents its interpretation to the audience. Fahan girls chose to interpret all books into one skit with the aid of a painted/drawn backdrop.
Students quizzed Mr Goodwolf on the history of the Berlin Wall in Germany. They all listened intently as he recounted the fall of the Wall. Students decided to use a photo that Mr Goodwolf had as part of their skit and asked how to write and pronounce the Wall in German, which is 'Die Maver'.
When drawing and painting the backdrop, Fahan cleaner, Phil, who has a Bachelor of Fine Arts, was most helpful showing the girls how to put depth into their pictures.
How wonderful to have such talented staff members surrounding us at Fahan and how wonderful that they are always so willing to help. Most impressive was how the girls worked as a team.

Learning about Science Investigations
Year 6 worked hard throughout the term with their science investigations in readiness for the annual University of Tasmania Science Investigation Awards held on 15 September.
The Science Investigation Awards are a statewide competition for Years 5 to 12 students. The Awards allow students to investigate a topic of their choice. Students plan what they are going to do and carry out their experiments to share their findings with judges from the research industry and education. Participating in the Awards provides an opportunity to actively use scientific inquiry, reasoning, communication, presentation, project planning and delivery.
All girls did a fantastic job answering varied questions from many judges and Fahan obtained eight winners who attended a special presentation night on Thursday 23 September.
Students were asked at the beginning of Term 2 what they would be interested in knowing more about. Topics included: Do cats and dogs prefer food especially designed for them, or human food? Which chocolate melts the quickest - milk, dark or white? Are dog’s mouths cleaner than humans? Can humans concentrate better with or without background noise? They then went about gathering details and results of their investigations in a concise and comprehensive report. All students worked through a scientific inquiry, reasoning, communication, presentation, project planning and delivery.
The most challenging part of the process was how to test their specific area of interest. For example: How do you test a dog's mouth and with what? How do I work out if it’s a fair test? After testing and revealing results, students gained a better understanding through visual aids. The girls learnt to manage their time effectively throughout the process and became efficient in scientific language.

Learning about Mountain Biking
On 14 September, our Year 6 classes enjoyed their annual Mountain Biking day (MTB). Last year many girls participated on the oval and tennis court as a taster. This year MTB consisted of many tracks, berns and lots of muddy puddles at Meehan Range. Learning to know your bike, brake safely, stop, gear change and seating positions were taken seriously by all girls. We rotated activities with another group pitching tents and cooking a warm drink on the trangia. These will be skills used for their upcoming camps in Year 7.
It was great to watch girls build their confidence especially those who don't regularly ride. - Chloe Colquhoun
I enjoyed the experience learning new and safe techniques about mountain biking. - Alice Reid

Learning about Self Defence
Our Year 9 Students have participated in a five-week course to learn the basics of Taekwondo and some self-defence with Mathew Chugg (parent of Evie in Year 7). Mathew, a 5th Dan Black Belt in Taekwondo, has represented Australia in Malaysia and New Zealand and has won numerous national titles. He has been a Taekwondo instructor for over 25 years, predominantly in Northern Tasmania and the girls thoroughly enjoyed his energetic approach. The girls gave it their best during the sessions and managed to complete a mini grading, covering some of the basic kicks, strikes and punches and ‘Basic Pattern’. Below are some thoughts from the students:
“I really enjoyed Taekwondo, it was so much fun and we all learnt a lot.” - Hannah
“It was a great experience to learn something new and exciting”- Ruby
“It was good to learn real life practical skills” - Prue

Learning About Enforcing the Law
As part of our unit learning about enforcing the law, the 9/10 Legal Studies class visited the Tasmanian Police Academy. This was an amazing opportunity for us to learn about the role of our State police officers, the training processes undertaken by recruits, tour the facilities, and have some hands on experience. The girls were able to learn about the myriad of roles police officers have including keeping the community safe, raising awareness, making arrests and giving evidence in court. The highlight of the day for the girls was having the opportunity to learn and practice the principles of self-defence in the gym facilities from the officer in charge of combat training all new recruits.

It has been a busy month for the Drama department with our Year 7 girls presenting performances of Witches and Charlie and the Chocolate Factory, based on the books by Roald Dahl, in the TM Hall.
The creative development was inspiring and the process included puppet workshops with Mel King, rap workshops with Max Bladel and dance choreography with Angela Barnard. Benjamin Nelan created the stunning 3D visual set and Brendon Veronese was the Production Manager. The students’ performances were exceptional, and it was a fantastic opportunity for our students to work with these outstanding Hobart artists.
The girls’ energy and commitment were exhibited in all their performances, and they are to be congratulated.

What a busy and exciting term we have celebrated in Term 3 2021! I have been so impressed by all the efforts of students and staff in putting together such an engaging program of learning, service and special days such as Science Week and Debating Week. As with every term, we finished off this week with a celebration of Fahan Spirit in our formal awards assembly where we were treated to a hilarious look back on the last 10 weeks, by our Year 12 Student Leaders in poetry form (some rhymes more successful than others!).
It has been a busy time and for the Year 7s and 8s we finish with a day of enrichment activities coordinated by the fabulous Miss Walch and her team to finish the term with a bang! I sincerely wish all families a peaceful break spent with loved ones and for our senior girls a balance of study and doing things that you love.
Thank you to all for sharing your Spirit, Learning and Community this term and we look forward to seeing you all back and ready to go in Term 4.

Spirit - Q&A with Year 5 Teacher, Mrs Ursula Dalton
![](https://fahanschool.schoolzineplus.com/_file/media/2163/ursula_dalton_copy.jpg)
What made you choose your career?
To be honest teaching wasn't my first choice. There were lots of other things that I was interested in, one being forensic science. But, being one of the eldest, of many cousins, I was always entertaining and looking after my younger cousins. I really enjoyed spending time with them. Their energy and honest appraisal of life was intriguing to me. So when I was in Year 10 I decided to do work experience at Hutchins, in the Junior School. That's when the seed to possibly do teaching was planted. It probably was aided by the fact that four of my cousins were in the junior school at the time, making my two weeks thoroughly enjoyable.
It has been a career that has allowed me to live and teach in a different country, state and parts of Tasmania, working with many children from diverse backgrounds. I wouldn't change a thing.
Of what are you most proud?
I am proud of myself and the life I have created with my husband and children. My children make me proud too! Their strength to do their best with courage, humour and grit. To own their mistakes, to work hard when hard work is required and their kindness towards others make me proud daily.
What do you enjoy most about working at Fahan?
That is easy - my girls, my colleagues, the support from administration, maintenance and IT are what makes working at Fahan enjoyable. Obviously, the beautiful grounds and my classroom are a joy everyday. It truly is a light- filled and dynamic space to be in.
How would you describe yourself in one sentence?
I would describe myself as an authentic, organised lover of quality chocolate, who is just a little bit cheeky!
Spirit - Wellbeing in Year 10
This week, our Year 10 girls have been completing some wellbeing initiatives across the School. The students had to design and implement an activity related to building wellbeing for others across one of the PERMAH (Positive Emotion, Engagement, Relationships, Meaning, Accomplishment and Health). There have been parachute games to build Positive Emotion and Health, Well “bean”ing bags to build Accomplishment through mindfulness under the willows, there have been chalk drawings of what brings wellbeing outside the art room, there are dad jokes and gratitude writing in the Years 7 and 8 foyer and walls of positive affirmations across the School to support our mindset.

Junior House Athletics 2021
Last Thursday saw the running of the Junior School House Athletics Carnival. We were lucky enough to have a beautiful day which allowed the girls to compete strongly and enjoy the experience.
The parent/daughter race was again a highlight, with entries swelling from six in the first time it was raced, to 21 entries at the 2021 event! This made all the better the victory by team Smith - Nick and Maisey - taking out first place in a hotly contested final.
The House points have also been calculated and congratulations goes to Franklin:
Franklin – 865
Fenton – 509
Freycinet – 479
A big thank you goes to staff and parents who assisted in the running of the Carnival. A special thank you to the Essex family, who once again provided their expertise, and to Queenborough Little Athletics Club for the use of their timing gates.
A squad will now be selected for the JSSATIS Interschool Athletics to be held in November. This will be posted on Friday, once the trials are complete.
Term 4 Sports
Entries have been submitted this week for Fahan’s Term 4 sports. Fahan will field three Cricket teams (two Years 3/4 and one Years 5/6), three Touch Football teams and one Years 3/4 Teeball team. Many thanks to those parents who have volunteered to assist. I will make contact in the near future.
Little Athletics
The Junior School is in the midst of our Athletics season. An Interschool Carnival lies ahead for Years 3-6 and Kinder to Year 2 have their Carnival in Term 4. It is a good time to mention that the Little Athletics club season is not far from getting underway. There are many centres in the Hobart area, with Queenborough Little Athletics running their competitions at Sandown Park. It is a great program, not just for the specific events it offers, but can support and improve performance in other sports the girls enjoy.

SATIS Athletics
On Saturday 18 September the Fahan SATIS Athletics team competed at the Domain Athletics Centre. Thank you to all the Fahan team members for representing our School on a Saturday and supporting each other. Our girls should always feel proud of their achievements as they compete with such determination and sportsmanship. Thank you also to the girls who came to the athletics with very little notice and who then competed as reserves last minute. A special mention to Neve Peating and Ivy Dickson who stepped into the U13 team. Neve threw the javelin and both Neve and Ivy ran in the U13 4 x 100m relay. Without these girls stepping into these events Fahan would have had no representatives. There were other girls who also stepped in to help and this is the true Fahan spirit.
Congratulations to the following place getters -
Laura Cooper – 3rd Open 200m, 2nd Open 400m
Lily Bushby – 3rd Open High Jump
Ella Atkins – 1st U16 800m, 1st U16 1500m – record time 4:41.68
Jessica Sypkes – 3rd U16 High Jump
Nell Terry- 1st U14 100m, 1st U14 200m
Maggie Steele – 2nd U14 400m, 2nd U14 Long Jump
Penny Geappen – 3rd U14 High Jump
Amelia Steedman – 2nd U123 High Jump
U14 4 x 100m relay – 1st (Nell Terry, Maggie Steele, Penny Geappen and Isis Young)

Open 4 x 100m relay – 2nd (Laura Cooper, Daisy Maning, Poppy Buissink and Sarah Sciberras)
Congratulations must go to all the relay teams who performed well.
Overall Fahan finished 4th in the Aggregate Girls Shield and 2nd in the U14 Pennant. Our senior team were 4th in the Girls Pennant and the Junior Girls were 6th.
Thank you to Fahan Alumni, Olivia and Sophie Young, and Miss Walch and Dr East who helped to coach the team. Thanks also to Mrs Lawson and Mrs Hayes for assisting the team on the day and to Darren Sheen and Gemma Wright who volunteered to officiate the high jump.
Australian Rules Football
Congratulations to the Years 9/10 AFL team who won the SSATIS Grand Final on Tuesday 21 September against Sacred Heart. It was a tough game and the competition was strong. The score was close with Fahan winning by 3 points!
Well done to everyone and thank you to Alexandra Badenach, Tess Allanby and Georgia McMullen for the coaching the team and to Mrs Hogan for being team manager.
Hockey
This term the Years 7/8 hockey team played in a competitive roster which saw them finish 5th on the ladder. The team improved in each game and it was wonderful to have a mixture of experienced players and players new to hockey. Thank you to Charlotte Jones and Abbey Willcox for coaching the team and thank you to Mrs Lawson for being team manager.
Soccer
Congratulations to the First Grade Soccer Team who played an excellent season of soccer and are to be commended on their efforts. Whilst they did not make the grand final, they showed a huge amount of determination in every game. Thanks goes to Alex Cisak and Robbie Marino for coaching and to Dr Fitzpatrick for managing the team.

Community - Important Reminders
Parents are kindly reminded that students must not arrive in the Junior School prior to 8:15am as there is no duty before this time. We thank you for your cooperation.
A reminder that students are required to wear Summer uniform including boaters from the start of Term 4 and that the Uniform Shop will not be open during the school holidays.
Community - P&F Save the Date
Dear Fahan families
I cannot believe it is already the end of Term 3!
Term 3 has been a very busy time for the P&F. We held the Hollywood Themed Gala and our first ever Made in Tasmania Father’s Day Stall with Dad-Daughter experiences. Both proved to be huge successes. Thank you again to all the volunteers and Fahan staff who helped at these events, and of course to all our attendees, donors and sponsors. Without your assistance they would not have been possible.
The P&F is also planning some fun activities for Term 4 and have already started pre-planning for next year.
If you have children in the Junior School, we ask that you save the date for the P&F Movie Night at Village Cinemas in Hobart for the showing of the Disney film Encanto on Sunday 5 December 2021 at 5:30pm. More details to come.
Look out for a parent survey in Term 4 requesting your input as to the type of main fundraiser we might hold in 2022. We value your input.
We had many new faces at this week’s P&F meeting and would love to see more. Our next meeting is on Tuesday 19 October at 7:00pm.
I hope you all get some rest (at least from packing lunches and drop offs) over the break.
Check out our updated page on the Tree, which we also hope to have part of the Fahan App, at:
https://thetree.fahan.tas.edu.au/homepage/7892.
Stay well,
Catherine Matterson
President

Community - Do you have a boat?
Fahan Rowing is looking to borrow or purchase two aluminium boats with 10-15 hp outboards in good condition for our coaches to use during training sessions. If any Fahan parents have such boats not being used, or know of any that would be available for us to use, even for just one season Octobert-March, or purchase outright, please send details to me at lamberts2@fahan.tas.edu.au

Fahan School Uniform Purchases
Fahan School uniform items can be ordered through the Flexischools website or App (Apple of Google). If a uniform fitting is required, please email Mrs Birgitta Browning at uniformshop@fahan.tas.edu.au
Canteen online orders are taken before school through the Flexischools website or App. A variety of foods are offered and healthy, nutritional choices are encouraged. Parents can also load money onto a student's ID card through the Flexischools App so that students from Year 3 may use their student card to purchase items from the canteen.
