News from Nateby
Dear parents,
We have been as busy as ever in the Boarding House and I hope you enjoy this Term 3 and Term 4 wrap up!
You may have seen some of the following photos in A Fortnight at Fahan or on the Boarding House Instagram account, but you will also find a few extras here too.
Kind regards
Ms Fiona Short
Head of Boarding
Weeks 1 & 2 - Term 3
We welcomed the girls back for Term 3. Sadly, we were missing one boarder for the first couple of weeks, as Sarah got caught up in quarantine returning from Melbourne. The girls were excited to start work on an old dollhouse I had acquired over the holidays.
Rory was delighted to get an Oodie and join the unofficial Boarding House uniform! She chose the avocado Oodie as she wanted to be the same as Darcy and Kate!
We were really proud of Lucy, who attended the presentation night for the Alliance Français. Lucy came second in the competition for her French speaking and listening skills. Très bien, Lucy!

Week 3 - Term 3
Sarah returned to the Boarding House just in time for Debating Week! Franklin performed incredibly well and Sarah did a wonderful job debating against the teachers, alongside her fellow House Chairs.
One of the highlights of this week was having breakfast for dinner! It started as a joke, but quickly became a reality as Birgitta and Maria organised a breakfast feast for us.
In other food related news, we all had a giggle when there was some salad left over one night, which somehow turned into a spa opportunity! It was quite a sight to see all the girls, including Aurora, with cucumbers on their eyelids.

Week 4 - Term 3
A few highlights from this week included an impromptu ‘bubble tea’ excursion, filling in the Census and a musical performance. One afternoon, the girls spontaneously decided to go and get bubble tea together in Sandy Bay. It was lovely to see everyone heading out together and genuinely enjoying each other’s company.
I took some of the girls to see ‘Wicked’ at Collegiate. We were delighted by an invitation to have dinner with the Collegiate boarders beforehand, and the girls enjoyed the opportunity to explore their Boarding House. We even discovered that they had the exact same print hanging on their wall!
This week also involved an activity that was a little less exciting, although very important. The girls completed the Census together in the dining room after dinner. The online process made it pretty straightforward, with the only tricky question being “Fiona, am I an inmate or a resident?”
We finally celebrated Lucy’s birthday (four months late) with a delicious ice-cream cake prepared by her fellow boarders and tutors. Thank you for your patience, Lucy!

Weeks 5 & 6 - Term 3
We had a couple of quiet weeks in the middle of the term. Meg’s dog came to visit and spend some time in the Boarding House. The girls always enjoy a visit from furry friends.
Week 6 was Book Week, which saw both Darcy and Aurora take part in the Fahan Book Week parade. Ms Meg McTaggart, one of the Year 6 teachers, came to spend an afternoon in the Boarding House. She brought some new board games with her, much to the delight of Lucy and Darcy. Ms McTaggart was a boarder at Geelong Grammar and really enjoyed spending some time in the House.

Week 7 - Term 3
On Tuesday 31 August, we welcomed Spring into the Boarding House with a magnificent feast. We invited some special guests to join us and the dining room was buzzing! Our terrific team of Birgitta and Maria worked so hard to make it an absolutely amazing night.
This week saw Darcy visit the University of Tasmania with the Year 6 class. They were presenting their Science projects as part of a schools’ competition. Darcy’s experiment involved researching the effect different liquids can have on plants. She certainly had a creative name for her project – I Wet My Plants!

Weeks 8 & 9 - Term 3
I was delighted to accompany Head Boarder, Sarah Toose, to Jane Franklin Hall during this week. We received an invitation to one of their ‘formal’ dinners, which are held every fortnight. The Principal at Jane Franklin Hall, Joanna Rosewell, is the aunt of Hannah Cuthbert (Year 12) so we had a nice Fahan connection! One of our boarders from last year, Wan Yi, also joined us and we had a wonderful night. The girls had a tour of the Jane campus after dinner and enjoyed chatting with the residents.
During Week 9, the girls continued to work on the dollhouse. There were some very creative uses of materials as the girls made furniture, rugs, cushions etc.

Week 10 - Term 3
A special event this week was the Fahan School Alumni Association Thank You Breakfast which was held for the Year 12 girls and their guests. I was delighted to be invited to attend the breakfast with Sarah. Catherine Matterson organised some personalised Fahan girl cookies for the Year 12 students on behalf of the P&F Association and they were a huge hit!
I’m including a photo that I snapped when I was picking Aurora up from childcare one afternoon. She stopped for a swing in the Kinder playground and I could see Eliza swinging in the background which is also one of her favourite things to do. I tried to get a photo of them simultaneously swinging!

Weeks 1 & 2 - Term 4
Lockdown! What a way to finish our first week back!
During this week, Chloe competed in several equestrian events at the Longford Show. She performed exceptionally well and shared her success with us at dinner. Mrs Lawson had joined us for the evening and was also most impressed.
Due to the Royal Hobart Show occurring at the end of Week 2, we had a very short week. I didn’t take many photos this week, but I did come across this old photo. It was on a Tasmanian History page on Facebook and is taken down at Long Beach/Nutgrove. If you look up on the hill, you can see Nateby!

Week 3 - Term 4
Week 3 was a big one as it was the last official week of School for the Year 12s. Chloe and Sarah embraced the Fahan tradition of dressing up for School each day. We farewelled our senior girls with a special dinner to mark the end of Year 12. It was a fabulous evening as we welcomed both past and present boarders and staff.
Once again, we feasted on the delicious food prepared by Maria and the dining room was beautifully decorated by Birgitta. It was a wonderful evening with lots of laughter and quite a few tears! Many of the staff and students took the opportunity to share their reflections about the Boarding House and the special people within it.

Week 4 - Term 4
We started this week with Halloween! Lucy, Sarah, Darcy, Margot (Darcy’s friend) and Grace (Lucy’s sister) all dressed up, ready to go trick or treating. Some of the Preps from Fahan came to visit the girls at Nateby where they handed out lollies. We were delighted that Grace made the trip from Oatlands to join in the fun!
Year 6 teacher, Ingrid Heather, has become a valued member of our boarding community. She brought her granddaughter, Halle, to dinner recently, much to Aurora’s delight. They had a ball, playing in the dining room and stealing a few shoes under the table!
This week also saw the opening of the Years 11 and 12 TCE Art Exhibition, which forms part of their final assessment. We were so proud of Sarah and the effort she had put into her artwork. It was also lovely to see the work of Tess McWilliam, who spent the first four weeks of 2021 in the Boarding House.
Lucy’s Year 10 dinner took place at the end of this week. Sarah sent me this gorgeous photo of them both. It has been the talk of the Boarding House for weeks, from dresses to shoes! The Year 12 Formal is coming up next!

Week 5 - Term 4
Week 5 saw the beginning of the TASC exams. We were excited to welcome two casual boarders to the Boarding House. Mia (Year 11) and Neve (Year 7) Peatling spent the week with us and there was a lot of fun happening! In amongst homework/study, the girls went for walks, had Wii Fit dance parties and started to get into the festive spirit with some Christmas movies.

Week 6 - Term 4
As I am writing this, we are in Week 6. On Tuesday evening we had a really special Christmas dinner with current boarders and staff. Once again, Birgitta and Maria outdid themselves with decorations and food. Our Secret Santa provided lots of laughs and some very thoughtful and (very funny) gifts were given.
This week sees Chloe and Sarah finally finish School for good as they complete their last exams. We wish them all the very best for life after Fahan and look forward to seeing them at Tossing Out!

It has been an honour to look after your daughters over the past (almost) 18 months. Aurora thinks the world of all her big sisters and so do I! The last two terms have been particularly special with only five boarders. The girls are all so different, yet complement each other so well. Our small community has functioned as a large family and we have really got to know each other.
Sarah, congratulations on managing both your leadership roles within the School and for maintaining a healthy balance physically, socially and academically. You successfully made it through an extremely demanding year!
Chloe, congratulations on your outstanding equestrian achievements and for keeping us all so grounded. We’ll never forget you regaling the Chair of the Board at dinner, with tales of your Bush Doofs!
Lucy, thank you for your consistently calm approach to everything you undertake. You are to be commended on your achievements, particularly with the Alliance Français. I will miss speaking French with you next year!
Eliza, congratulations on your many sporting achievements, especially representing the State in Water Polo! I will always remember the very moving speech you gave at the Year 12 farewell dinner.
Darcy, thank you for the sense of fun you bring to the Boarding House and for being so kind to Aurora when she wants to play with you. I don’t think we ever saw you so sad as when you broke your arm and couldn’t play any sport – so don’t break any more bones!
A huge thank you to the team of terrific tutors who have supported the boarders this year. Maddie, Meg, Alice and Brooke all genuinely love being part of the Fahan boarding community and I can’t thank them enough for the warmth and dedication they bring to their roles.
I hope that you are all able to join us for a Boarding Families’ Christmas Afternoon Tea on Friday 3 December between 3:30pm – 4:30pm. There will be an EdSmart coming out shortly with all the details.
Wishing you and your families a wonderful Christmas!
Warmest regards,
Fiona
