Welcome to our new look A Fortnight at Fahan! We are delighted to share with you the stories of our girls living the Fahan School values of Learning, Spirit and Community every fortnight.
As much as we love our girls, one of the most joyous experiences of this year has been welcoming adults back on to the campus to share in the work of raising our girls at Fahan School through COVID-safe events like Assemblies, P&F meetings, Parent/Teacher interviews, and gatherings of our Alumni Association. Our alumni are an integral part of our Community, and it never fails to amaze me to see and hear about the connection our leavers of all ages feel with their alma mater. It is the strongest and most affectionate relationship of its kind that I have seen in all the schools that I have worked in, and Term 2 will bring us several innovations to enjoy in this space.
Alumni-Student Networking Breakfasts
These bespoke events have been curated to utilise the experience and knowledge of our young alumni to enlighten and inspire our Year 12 girls as they make plans for their future. Our girls’ futures are exciting, and cannot be planned for using a ‘one size fits all’ approach to career development. So, as a first step, we are connecting with alumni who graduated from 2010 onwards to join us in a friendly and casual breakfast conversation with our Year 12 girls about life after School. Hosted by me and Deputy Principal, Jack Machin, each breakfast will connect up to six current Year 12 students and six alumni with guided conversation around any number of topics including (but not limited to):
- Life after school – what is it really like?
- The realities of life at university and different courses on offer
- The application process for university
- Insights into what it is like to work in your chosen industry/profession
- Alternative pathways after School
- Alumni who have studied at TAFE and have a traineeship or apprenticeship
It will be such a pleasure to welcome our alumni back to the Boardroom for these breakfasts and I know that the girls will find this most useful and thought-provoking.
Refreshed Gerdy Jevtic Medal/TM Lecture/Pride of Fahan Event at Fahan School from 2021
In honour of past principal Mrs Gerdy Jevtic (Principal from 1979-1982), the Gerdy Jevtic Medal is presented to a member of the Fahan Alumni who has brought honour to our School – through their work, their achievements, or their contribution to the community – in Tasmania, nationally or internationally.
Introduced in 2010 to commemorate the 75th Anniversary of the School, the Travers Morphett Lecture is a special event to celebrate the achievements of Fahan School Alumni. Delivered by a member of the Alumni who is an expert in her field, the lecture is named after the founders of the School, Miss Isobel Travers and Miss Audrey Morphett.
The Pride of Fahan Alumni Award is granted to a current Fahan student each year. It is an initiative of the Fahan School Alumni Association (FSAA), with support from the School. The Award gives students the opportunity to fuel their dream in an endeavour they are passionate about, and have achieved some success in, but require extra assistance to fulfil their ambitions. From 2021, the selection of the successful applicant will be made by the FSAA, in conjunction with the Principal. The Award recipient will receive $2500, and details will be given shortly to girls in Years 10-12 about the process attached to the Award.
In an exciting development, from 2021, the recipient of the Gerdy Jevtic Medal will deliver the Travers Morphett Lecture, and present the Pride of Fahan Alumni Award to a current Fahan student. The identity of the 2021 recipient of the Gerdy Jevtic Medal will be announced very soon – suffice to say, the Fahan Community will acknowledge this person as a most worthy and inspiring recipient.
Toucan Tech: The Fahan Alumni Community
Fahan School will launch its alumni community portal utilising ToucanTech, a cloud-based community database and website software used by many schools and universities around the world. It will be a wonderful way to connect with all our alumni and is a fantastic opportunity to bring groups of alumni with shared experiences together.
Over the next few months, our alumni will be invited to join The Fahan School Community website with a special member log-in portal. This website will enable our alumni to share stories, career highlights, join discussions, run groups, celebrate reunions and invite peers.
In the future, there will also be the opportunity for Community members to find mentors, build professional connections, display business profiles, share job boards, industry groups, forums and career resources, and use a search directory to spread inspiration and fuel career progression within our alumni network across the globe. We are excited to launch this digital resource very soon!
Guiding us in the alumni space is the just-ratified leadership group of the Fahan School Alumni Association: President: Pip Cooper, Vice President: Lisa Brown, Secretary: Fiona Pringle-Jones, Treasurer: Rachel Allenby. Committee Members include Kate Langridge, Jacquie Ray, Louise McMullen, Louise Wilkins and Rachael Moore.
The School thanks this Committee sincerely and looks forward to working closely with all alumni of Fahan School.
And finally, while not an alumni, we recently welcomed another amazing woman, Tracey Ezard, to Fahan School. An internationally renowned speaker on developing strong and vibrant professional learning communities to our School, Tracey joined us on the first day of Term 2. It was a day of quite fabulous professional learning for all of our staff which focussed on enhancing collective wisdom and building collective capacity at Fahan School. Creating this ‘buzz’ within our staff learning community is the springboard to growth and the key to the success of our strategic plan in its implementation phase.
Assessing how strong and effective our learning culture is can be a challenge when we are sitting in the middle of it. To gauge what is going on we needed to sit back and with Tracey’s assistance, reflect on ourselves and our School in terms of the following components of a positive staff learning culture:
- Mindset: the way people in our learning community at Fahan School think.
- Environment: the actions our learning community takes to stimulate professional learning, and the implementation of processes and structures to support it.
- Dialogue: the quality of the conversations we have as members of our learning community at Fahan School
In each of these areas, we looked at how we feel as individual educators, and how we feel as educators within our School Community. Work continues post-workshop to articulate the next steps we must take together to design and implement change in our environment to build our collective capacity, and the girls will begin to see and feel the impact of this work very soon!
In our next newsletter, I hope to share information regarding the capital master planning process the School is undertaking, as well as an update on the progress of the first initiatives for 2021 in our strategic plan. In the meantime, I wish all our Fahan mums a very happy Mother's Day on Sunday.
Best wishes,
Penny Curran-Peters
Learning about nature
On Wednesday 5 May, Kindergarten and Prep along with Mrs Denman, Mrs Gath, Mrs Wiggins, Ms Bowler and Ms Greaves spent the morning at the Waterworks Reserve. This was a wonderful opportunity to continue on with our Outdoor Education in the Junior School as we partake in Nature School at a location off site. We started our morning with our Acknowledgement to Country (see below). We say our acknowledgement each time we visit The Forest at School and it is our way to stop and be still and reflecting on the space around us. It grounds us as we start our 90 minutes outside.
We will be visiting this site three times during Term 2 to look at not only change over time but to also become familiar with another space and the opportunity to explore and be still in nature. We packed magnifying glasses and were able to seek out the tiniest parts of our world. In future visits we hope to bring our Nature Journals to capture images of leaf litter that inspires us. Mrs Evans is even going to join us for our final visit later in the term.
Here is the land
Here is the sky
Here are my friends
Here am I.
We thank the people,
Now and before.
Who cared for the land,
From mountain to shore.
Here together we will,
Discover and grow.
We will care for country,
Wherever we go.

In Mathematics in 5D we have been learning about three dimensional shapes. Particularly how to compare, describe and name prisms and pyramids. We made a group presentation about our chosen shape and then created a video. We presented our completed presentation and video to the class.
The shapes that we chose were a cone, cube, cylinder and a pentagonal prism. Some interesting facts about these shapes are:
“A cone has one flat surface and one curved surface”- Grace Costelloe.
“All edges of a cube must be the same length and all faces must be perfect squares”- Maisey Smith.
“A cylinder has two flat surfaces and one curved surface. The flat surface is circles. The circular surfaces join the two flat surfaces together”- Isabelle Manson.
“A pentagonal prism has 10 vertices or corners and 15 edges”- Evie Imberger.

Learning about Indigenous Servicemen
![](https://fahanschool.schoolzineplus.com/_file/media/43/som251mr_yininmadyemi_installation_1024x678.jpeg)
In Library this week, students from Years 3 – 6 reflected on ANZAC Day. We studied the sculpture, Yininmadyemi, Thou didst let fall. Situated in Sydney’s Hyde Park, this is a significant artwork by Aboriginal artist, Tony Albert, acknowledging Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander men and women who have served to protect our country.
We viewed Aboriginal actor, Richard Green, reading, Alfred’s War, a picture book written by Rachel Bin Salleh and illustrated by Samantha Fry. Afterwards we constructed small crosses to commemorate the Indigenous service-men who were not recognised for their service. We will attempt to construct 1000 crosses before NAIDOC Week to remember the Indigenous soldiers who fought in the Great War.
Learning about chemical reactions
We have been busy studying the basics of Chemistry in Year 9 Science this term. We have learnt all about ions, isotopes and chemical formulae, and now we are starting to balance chemical equations. To help us understand the molecules and reactions we are studying, we have observed lots of little reactions during our lessons.
We also observed one giant reaction, called ‘Elephant's Toothpaste’ in class on Monday. We learnt that it is a decomposition reaction in which hydrogen peroxide is broken down into the harmless products of water and oxygen gas. Dr Stewart performed this exciting reaction for us in the lab, and he added a catalyst (potassium iodide) to give the reaction a ‘kick-start’. Some of us put our hands near the ‘toothpaste’ afterwards and felt the heat that was released from the reaction – this makes it an exothermic (heat-releasing) reaction. After watching the reaction, we then wrote up the equation and tried balancing it. We then all got the chance to make Elephant’s Toothpaste in pairs in our next lesson, but on a smaller scale.

![](https://fahanschool.schoolzineplus.com/_file/media/56/toothpaste_4.png)
![](https://fahanschool.schoolzineplus.com/_file/media/57/toothpaste_5.png)
“It is great to see reactions occurring in real life, because the things we are learning are quite complex. When we see them happening in front of us, it makes us understand more about how the reactants combine to form the products,” Prue Clarke, Zoe Le Guilly, Grace Couser.
Learning about migration
In Inquiry this term, Year 6 have been looking into stories of groups of people who migrated to Australia since Federation and the reasons they migrated. We have watched some videos about different eras in Australian migration and have even been lucky enough to have some guest speakers, who are staff at Fahan. The guest speakers have had very different stories, talking about both the push and pull factors of migrating to Hobart.
After watching the video clips, we made migration headlines inspired by the videos. The headlines had to be like newspaper headlines that described the era of migration in one sentence. Some of the sentences were;
- Was Migration Fair for Everyone?
- Strike it Rich in Australia
- Post War Immigration Takes Australia by Storm
- Irish Immigrate Due to Poverty
- Chinese Massacred Over our Gold!
By Evelyn Bullard, Ollie McDonald and Meral Asad.

Learning about healthy eating
Over the past two weeks in Food, Cooking and Nutrition TASC 2, we have been focussing on diet- related disease and recipe modification. Last week we made lasagne, using recipe modification to swap out ingredients for a healthier substitution, making it an improved and more nutritious version of the recipe.
Instead of using a bechamel sauce we substituted with ricotta cheese. The ricotta was mixed with two eggs and fresh parsley to make it smooth and easy to spread onto the pasta sheets. As a result, the lasagne with the ricotta cheese was flavoursome and successful. Making healthy substitutes to your cooking also helps reduce the risk of contracting any diet-related disease. This week we also made a lemon slice and choc chip cookies (enjoyed in moderation!). Later in the term we will be exploring healthy lunchbox ideas. Here are some pinwheel ideas to keep in mind for a healthy lunchbox snack.

Learning about explorers
In Year 4, we stepped into the shoes of a world navigator or explorer as they travelled to Africa, the Americas, Asia and Australia during the Age of Discovery. Some of our explorers included Christopher Columbus, William Dampier, and Ferdinand Magellan. We also learnt about explorers of Tasmania including Abel Tasman, Tobias Furneaux, Matthew Flinders, Bruni d'Entrecasteaux, William Bligh and Marc-Joseph Marion du Fresne. As part of looking at the life and travels of our explorer, we made a timeline of their life and a model of their boat.

Learning about the Law Society
The Year 11/12 Legal Studies class was delighted to welcome Ms Fleur Dewhurst, the Principal Lawyer for the Tasmanian Law Society to visit. Ms Dewhurst explained and inspired the girls through her discussions about the importance of advocacy; the intricacies of her job; and some amazing cases that she has worked on. The Legal Studies class were given an amazing insight into working in the legal profession in Tasmania. We really appreciated having the opportunity to have a member of the legal profession community come along and share with us!

Learning about safety
![](https://fahanschool.schoolzineplus.com/_file/media/89/img_1503.jpeg)
The Year 3 girls were excited to arrive back at School for Term 2, to be greeted with the news that there was a new piece of equipment in the playground. It was even more exciting to find out that the Year 3 class was responsible for helping to decide the best and safest way to use it! As a class, we decided that the only way we could really find out the best and safest way was by investigating (and by investigating, we really mean playing).
Before jumping straight on to the spinner, we thought about what we really needed to find out. Some questions we had, included:
- How many should go on at once?
- Should we sit or stand?
- How long should we have before letting other people on?
- What if someone wants to go fast and someone else wants to go slow?
Here are some thoughts about the spinner so far:
- We thought that only six people at a time would make it safer because the spinner doesn’t need too much weight on it.
- It is fun to help your friends by pushing, but sometimes it can get really tiring. So we decided that you can swap if you need to so that you don’t get too tired.
- If someone wants to go fast or slow, you always ask them. If people want different speeds you try and make everyone happy.
- Sometimes it can be fun if you get dizzy and it is nice to hear everyone laughing together.
- It is nice for everyone to have a chance to have a go. We decided that if you are waiting you should wait on the grass area and the time limit should be 2 minutes to keep it fair.
We know that everyone in the Junior School will enjoy playing on the new equipment.

Spirit - Q&A with Science Co-ordinator, Felicity Jacobs

What made you choose your career?
After I finished my degrees in Science/Forest Science, I had a gap year and spent that nannying. I really loved working with the kids I looked after and when a friend decided to enrol in teaching at Uni, I went along for the ride. And it stuck... I also really enjoyed my own schooling and have fond memories of my own teachers.
Of what are you most proud?
As a teacher, I think I am most proud of the effort and love that I put into every day at school. I absolutely love sharing the wonders of science with my students. I am also really proud of the commitment my family and I have made to social justice, and helping out the beautiful refugee families in our lives.
What do you enjoy most about working at Fahan?
I absolutely love working with all my students – I love being able to help them learn and have some fun at the same time. Also, my brilliant colleagues who are so committed to Fahan, are lots of fun and always have each other’s backs.
How would you describe yourself in one sentence?
Someone who cares and wants to make a difference.
Spirit - Children's Day (Kodmono Hi)
こどものひ, or Children’s day is a national holiday in Japan on the 5 May each year. The holiday is the last day of a series of public holidays called ‘Golden Week’. The event pays respect and honours children's strengths and personalities. They celebrate the new generation of children and pray for their good health, success and happiness in life.
Leading up to the day, carp streamers called ‘koinobori’ こいのぼり are hung on bamboo poles displayed outside homes, in streets and parks and across rivers to look like they are swimming. The carp fish was chosen as a symbol of strength because they swim bravely upstream and represent the desire for children to become brave and strong individuals.
This year the Year 8 classes made our own style of Koinobori to hang in the gardens. They were made of completely recycled materials. We used soft drink bottles and chip packets, amongst other materials, then wrote wishes for our future in Japanese.

Spirit - Music to our ears
Prep and Kinder Music have had a vibrant start to the year! We sing from the top of the hill all the way down to the Music room and then we sing some more! In Term 1, the girls have learnt some new musical words including Beat, Tempo, Presto and Largo and have had fun singing and dancing to help show their understanding of these Music words. We have already learnt so many songs and have sung about a greedy dog called Jed, a naughty pussy cat, Mrs Hen and her 10 chicks as well as a bunch of Easter songs. This term, the girls are embarking on a learning journey that will see them expand their music vocabulary and will focus on the incredible work of Camille Saint-Saens, The Carnival of the Animals.
Year 1 and Year 2 have also made a great start to the year with their work on violin in Music lessons. For Year 1, this was an exciting introduction to string playing and the girls were thrilled to be allocated their own instrument to use in class! In Year 2, this program continues and during this year the girls will be learning to read notes and rhythm on a page and to realise the importance of working in an ensemble with a Conductor. Every Tuesday Year 1 and Year 2 come together for choir and have already learnt quite a range of songs. We are currently working on an evergreen (a song popular across generations) from The Sound of Music and a funky little number called Witches Brew which has a rock piano accompaniment!
Please enjoy these two recordings of the girls favourite songs from last term, My Dog Jed (Prep) and Mrs Hen (Kinder), performed by Prep accompanied by Mr Power.

Spirit - Junior School Sport
Junior Hockey
The Junior Hockey season commenced on Saturday morning. It was a beautiful sunny day except, of course, if you were standing in the shade at Cornelian Bay at 9am!
The girls made a really pleasing start to the season. There were very competitive games of minkey, half field was off to a winning start and our Open Primary team fought bravely against the odds, only to concede a goal late in the game.
Thank you to our coaches; James Seddon, Kimbra Gumley, Tony Bradfield, Olivia Wilson and Emily Bushby. Also, to our parents who are out supporting the girls and the coaches. Just a reminder that where possible please try and arrive at least 15 minutes before the game start time, coaches may even have an earlier request. This allows for a warm up and also for coaches to know who is there and organise subs, positions etc.
Lastly, I'd like to convey a lovely little moment from one of the minkey games and a great example of Fahan Spirit. New Town had just won the ball and was progressing down the field. As the crowd pans across we see the New Town dribbler pass two Fahan players who are otherwise occupied. Bonnie is doing her shoe laces up and Violet is being a good friend and teammate and holding her stick for her so it doesn’t get wet! New Town scores, the crowd has a giggle and the girls worry about the more important things like helping their friends. It certainly put a smile on all our faces!
Junior Netball
This roster gets underway next week. The girls have been given rosters and have now had at least a couple of training sessions. At present numbers in the 5/6 teams are tight due to some late withdrawals, so if there are any girls that could ‘fill in’ on the odd occasion, could they please let me know.
Please be mindful of which venue you are attending as many have different COVID requirements eg. Uni Gym still with a temperature check, SHC no spectators, use of Check in TAS app at some facilities. Fahan does not have a spectator limit but spectators will be required to sign in with the Check in TAS app. Most games are a 4pm start but some may start earlier/later due to the need for two games at a venue.
Junior House Cross Country
Details regarding this event are below. At present, it will be held at Nutgrove Beach, pending a closer inspection of the tides.
The House Cross Country does have a short course and long course option for the girls, understanding that this can be a challenging event for many. The girls are working towards this event in their Physical Education lessons and hopefully this preparation will give them the confidence to attempt the long course on the day. The girls must also be mindful that, to be considered for Interschool selection, they must finish in the top eight competitors in the long course event. Fahan can only enter eight competitors in each year group.
What: Junior House Cross Country
Date: Thursday 20 May

Spirit - Senior School Sport
All sports teams began their rostered games this week and it is wonderful to see so many Fahan girls participating in School sports. I wish all the teams the best for their season and look forward to seeing you all in action.
This term Fahan has sports teams participating in hockey, volleyball, Australian Rules Football, waterpolo and netball. Thank you to all coaches, team managers and umpires.
Cross Country
The Senior School Cross Country was held on Thursday 6 May at Sandown. All girls from Years 7 – 12 competed a 2.8km race around the Sandown ovals and on Nutgrove Beach. The beach was at was it’s best with the sun shining and the water like a mirror. Freycinet, Franklin and Fenton did their best cheering which certainly encouraged their team mates to give their best effort.
The winning house will be announced in assembly on Tuesday 11 May. Congratulations to the following girls for winning their age group:
Under 13 – Tara Sciberras
Under 14 – Maggie Steele
Under 15 – Prue Clarke

There will be cross country/fitness training sessions at school on Tuesday and Friday mornings from 7:00am–7:50am. All students are welcome to attend. These sessions will begin from the Fahan Gym. If there are any questions or concerns, please contact me.
The SSATIS Cross Country will be held on Wednesday 26 May at Pontville. The team will be announced next week and an Edsmart letter will be sent to all girls and families with details of the event. The Symmons Plains Cross Country will be held on Tuesday 29 June. A team for this will be selected after the SSATIS cross country.
Sailing
Congratulations to the Sailing team who competed in the 2021 Tasmanian Teams Sailing State Championships on Saturday 24 and Sunday 25 April. Congratulations to Grace Hooper, Anabelle Zeeman, Abbey Willcox, Jorja Cooper, Evie Gray, Sarah Reynolds and Issy Willcox. The team finished 4th overall and were first in the girls division. The Fahan Sailing team has now been invited to compete in the Australian Secondary Schools Teams Racing Championships in July at George’s River in NSW.
Congratulations also to Issy Willcox, Abbey Willcox and Grace Hooper who competed in the International Cadet Australian Championship, held at Sandringham Yacht Club, Victoria from Monday 12 to Friday 16 April. They represented themselves and Tasmania with great poise and sportsmanship, in at times tricky conditions (big wind and waves, and light wind/big waves!). Abbey finished 15th, Issy 11th and Grace (with sister Olive) finished 7th overall in a very competitive fleet. Grace and Olive earned a place in the Australian team to compete at the world championship in Lake Garda, Italy in August. It is acknowledged that they won’t be able to travel, however it is important to recognize this achievement.
Australian Rules Football
On Monday 19 April, Keala Hayes, Sophie Bury, Georgie Parnham, Stella Jones, Lucy Groom were selected to represent Southern Tasmania in South versus North/North West game. These girls were part of winning teams and congratulations to Stella Jones who was awarded Best On Ground in the U14 game.
Congratulations also to Anna Edwards who played in the Medley's team at the AFLW All Star Championships. The games were played at various grounds in Melbourne and the competition was 10-16 April.

Community - Year 12 Fundraiser
Dear Fahan Community,
Each year, the Year 12 cohort selects two charities which we support through a series of fundraising events. This year we have chosen the Variety Freya Fund and the Kamara’s Heart Foundation. Both of these charities are locally run by Tasmanian families. The Freya Fund is run by our own Mr Williamson and his wife, providing financial support to families of children with profound disabilities or illnesses through one-off donations. Kamara’s Heart is run by a couple who fled Ghana and Sierra Leone but now live in Hobart; they have set up the foundation to fund two separate schools in Sierra Leone.
This year our major fundraising event for these charities will be an online raffle and we are actively seeking prizes! These can include anything like gift baskets, gift certificates, hotel stays, local food and wine, exciting experiences etc. All of the profits go directly to the charities mentioned above, so you would be supporting two amazing causes; any donations would be greatly appreciated! Our raffle is scheduled to be drawn at the end of this Term.
Please contact Miranda Jones on jonesm2@student.fahan.tas.edu.au if you would like to donate a prize or find out more information.

Community - News from Nateby
Last week we were delighted to welcome the Year 2 girls into the Boarding House. The girls have been learning about the history of the School and were excited to explore the Boarding House as part of their inquiry. One of their favourite things was going upstairs in Nateby House and seeing the balcony. Mrs Baxter told the girls how her mother used to sleep on the balcony when she was a boarder! The Year 2s took part in a dining room ‘scavenger hunt’ where they had to answer a number of questions. The girls then came up with their own questions which are on display in the dining room for the boarders to answer. Their questions included:
What is your favourite thing about the Boarding House?
How late have you stayed up?
Have you ever done anything naughty?
Do you miss your family?
What food do you eat?
Is it hard not to talk to your friends at night?
What is the best thing about the Boarding House?
To finish off their visit, the girls were given some delicious treats to take home with them. They had honey joys and jam drops made by our wonderful Boarding House cook, Maria!

Community - Celebrating Earth Day
It was wonderful to welcome students from Kindergarten to Year 2 back for Term 2 on a date that coincided with Earth Day, an annual event dedicated to raising awareness about the various environmental challenges that face our planet. Students from Kindergarten to Year 2 read Ten Things I Can do to Help My World by Melanie Walsh and discussed how we help look after the earth at School and at home. We spent time studying our environment and drew pictures to illustrate our knowledge and wonderings. Following this activity we shared a quick morning tea before heading off to play.
