We have reached the end of Term 2, and what a busy term it has been.
Our Careers Expo was an excellent evening, and we welcomed many people to our largest in-person event for some time. Many students took the opportunity to talk with professionals about possible pathways and I know that in many households the event inspired conversations and thoughts about the future.
We also had great success at the JSATIS Cross Country Carnival last week. There were outstanding results in all year levels and I can confidently say that it was our best result ever! By all accounts, students thoroughly enjoyed the day. We also had an excellent day at the SATIS Cross Country Carnival, with many wonderful results. Congratulations to all competitors, you certainly did Fahan proud.
On Wednesday, I attended a Naidoc Week breakfast, along with our two Deputy Head Girls, Sarah Hodgman and Jorja Cooper. This was provided by the Department of Foreign Affairs and the guest speaker was Rodney Dillon who is a local Tasmanian identity and Indigenous Rights Adviser at Amnesty International Australia. This talk was indeed inspiring and Fahan will be continuing to work on our Reconciliation Action Plan.
Today we farewelled Dr Alison Manson who has been at Fahan for a cumulative total of 14 and half years. Her contribution has indeed been wonderful, and we thank her for all that she has done for so many students over these years. We wish Ali all the very best for her next venture and we hope that she will be able to come back and visit us sometimes. She will be greatly missed.
I hope you all have a wonderful, restful holiday and I look forward to seeing you in Term 3.
Best wishes
Meg Lawson

Exciting Announcement- Little Sparks!
🖐🏼 Little hands make lovely mess 🖐🏼
We are very excited to announce the launch of our School’s very own play-based learning program, Little Sparks, open to all children from birth to four years.
Opening on the first day of Spring, we invite parents and carers with younger children to join us for fun and engaging play-based activities in one of our early childhood classrooms every Thursday from 9:15am to 10:15am.
Hosted by our wonderful Fahan staff, Mrs Tania Gath and Ms Fiona Short, children and parents are encouraged to join in on the fun, playful, messy, noisy, active and delightful activities on offer, both indoors, and the outdoors, within Fahan’s incredible gardens, playgrounds and facilities.
Our hope is that parents from near and far, come together to connect and share their experiences while also participating in their children’s play.
There is no cost to visit and is open to all interested families (children do not need to be enrolled at Fahan to join in).
Little Sparks at Fahan School

Learning about Family History
Prep students have been exploring concepts of family and history. Students have recorded their family tree, identified celebrations and traditions that bring their families together, as well as shared treasured baby photos and stories! Students reflected on what a memory is:
Lily - A memory is something that is in your heart.
Eloise - A memory is something that makes you smile.
Evie – A memory is something you did long ago.
Olympia - A memory is about something that you care for and that you love, and that you will never forget.
Halle – A memory is something that you used to see but it might have died like your cat or your dog.
Fei – A memory is something that you can’t remember, and then if you give something to someone, like an old grandma, then you will give the memory back.
Misha – Memory means you always remember stuff that you love.
Eve – A memory is making new friends.
Lizzie - It’s something that happened very long ago and then you remember it.
Emma – A memory is something that you do with your Mum and Dad.
Bella – A memory is when you help each other, and you tell people about your secrets.
Matilda L – It is something you love.
Zoe – It’s something you have worked hard for, something you tried to do really well.
Imogen – A memory is to tell the truth.
Matilda P – A memory is love.

Learning about Digital Technology
In Year 4 Digital Technology, the girls designed and created a Makey Makey touch sensitive/interactive poster of their animal information report. The photos show the girls holding their information report poster. When the metal split pins next to the report’s headings, such as diet, habitat, classification and description, are touched, the poster, using Scratch, plays the girl’s voice recordings about their animal. This activity allows students to use the Makey Makey as a digital system, create a digital solution, investigate how circuits work and evaluate the effectiveness of the interactive poster design for a user.

Learning about Rube Goldberg Machines
A Rube Goldberg machine is a machine that is unnecessarily complicated, but it is designed to do a simple task. It uses different materials to trigger a chain reaction until the final event. It uses forces and energy transfers to make movement in the machine.
Year 7 studied this as part of our investigation into energy and forces. We learnt about many different forms of energy and how forces act as part of our introduction to physics. We learnt that forces impact the motion and movement of everyday objects - whether there is friction against your skin on a slide, or gravitational energy when throwing or dropping a ball. A force is a push, pull or twist wherever the interaction of an object connects to another. We learnt that energy transfers happen when an object that carries energy transfers that same energy to another object. When a ball is rolling, and it knocks another ball, kinetic energy is transferred to the new object. Another example is dominos because when they are lined up together and one is knocked, they all fall, transferring energy to each other.
The best thing about building the Rube Goldberg Machine was getting to experiment with different forces and energy forms. We had lots of fun building and experimenting with various materials and ideas. We used things like ramps, slides, swinging balls, counterweights and balloons. We also realised that that there are multiple forces acting in a Rube Goldberg machine such as friction, air resistance and gravity. There are also lots of transfers that go through a machine such as a ball passing kinetic energy to another object. Learning about this machine was a great way to expand our knowledge in an engaging, inspired way.

Learning about Japanese - Tenki
The Year 5 classes have been learning about the weather and seasons in Japanese classes.
Students have learnt to say what the weather is like and can read and recognise some weather words in Japanese hiragana script. We have also had a lot of fun playing a traditional Japanese children's shoe throwing game to try and predict the weather and making Teru Teru Bouzu talisman dolls to ward off rainy weather.

Learning about Mount Field
This week Year 6 went to Mount Field National Park.
The bus left at 8:00am so we had to be at School a litter earlier than usual.
We were on the bus for around an hour before we stopped for a snack at a park in New Norfolk.
It was very chilly when we arrived at Mount Field, and we were very glad to be wearing all our warm layers!
Inside the visitors' centre, we met Tom who spoke with us about about all the different types of fungi. We were all shocked to discover that there is an unusual type of fungi that can actually grow out of an ant!
Jayde and Mrs Heather then chatted to us about the walk we were going on.
We set off along the track on a 25-minute circuit, taking our time to look at all the fungi and plants along the way.
We then arrived at the waterfall which was beautiful. Sheets of water poured down and crashed into the pond below.
After commpleting our walk we have a barbeque of sausages, veggie burgers, bread and, of course, tomato sauce. Yum!
We all had a fantastic day. Thank you Mrs Cole, Jayde, Hannah, and Mrs Heather, for such an awesome day.

Learning about Cyber Safety
This week, Year 7 students attended a presentation called Think You Know delivered by our local Police Officers. The class were informed with Cyber Safety information and techniques to encourage critical thinking and learnings to prevent harm, to identify safe or unsafe situations and know when and how to seek help.

Learning about Chemistry
Year 12 Chemists have had a busy term learning about organic chemistry. To complement our theory, we tried our hand at some chemical synthesis to produce aspirin, using more advanced chemistry equipment, such as round bottom flasks, condensers, and vacuum flasks. Once our product was ready, we were able to take our samples to the UTAS Chemistry department where we analysed the samples using Infrared Spectroscopy. Although our analysis showed that our samples were not the pure aspirin we hoped they were, the students all enjoyed using their skills and knowledge in a real world application.
The excursion to UTAS also included a presentation about studying Chemistry and a visit to the Organic Mass Spectrometer, and X-ray diffractometer where students were given an overview of the types of research these instruments are used for. Everyone was interested to learn about the variety and diversity of research and career paths that can follow on from a Chemistry degree. There might even be some future chemists on the horizon!

Learning about la culture française
On Thursday 7 July some lucky senior French students celebrated the end of term with a visit to the State Cinema to see a new French film. The Year 11 class then continued on to Daci & Daci, where they sampled delicious pâtisseries – a just reward for their hard work and the successful completion of the recent mid-year examinations!
Julia Benyon, Grace Hooper, Jessica Sypkes

Learning about Drama
The Year 6 class was invited to be the first audience at a performance of the Years 9/10 Drama elective. This provided a great learning opportunity for the Year 6 students who stayed after the show to ask questions of the Years 9/10 students.
On Wednesday 29 July, our drama class had the opportunity to perform our end of semester play of Dreams by Barry Kay in front of the Year 6s. They really enjoyed watching us and appreciated the efforts that had been made to make a fast-moving, fun, and lively performance, complete with fast backstage changes. It was beneficial for us having an audience for the first time, and at the end they were given time to ask us questions about the play. Ruby Chesterman
I really enjoyed the visual effects of the play, they were amazing. I wish I could do editing for the plays too. But I have to say, Ben did a really good job. My dream is to be a star in a movie. Bailey M
The actors did well in playing the different characters with lots of expression. The little parts that that they made up were funny and quite smart. I had many laughs throughout watching it and well done to Ms Best for organising this wonderful play. Lauren S

Spirit of Year 5
Year 5 has been very fortunate to welcome 14 new students this year. Their first semester has been filled with amazing opportunities and we were curious about what they thought of their new school, so we quizzed them. Their responses were overwhelmingly positive. Below is a short summary of their comments.
We love …
- that Fahan is a small school and that everyone knows each other
- the people, the beautiful grounds and all the teachers
- our new friends and how welcoming this School is to new students
- everything about Fahan, especially all of the sport
- all the new friendships and the chance to make old friendships stronger
- that everyone is kind
- the opportunities for Art, Debating and Drama
- access to the canteen
- that everyone cheers and supports you at sporting events
- that people asked us to join in and play with them on our first day
- two lessons of Physical Education each week
- the opportunity to go on camp and all of the outdoor education excursions
- being part of the Fahan School
Thank you to everyone who continues to be thoughtful and welcoming, it is always appreciated.
Mrs Susan Wright

Spirit of Performance
The Years 9/10 Drama elective students presented an excellent performance for the School Community. The play directed by Christine Best was supported by Production Manager Brendon Veronese, Visual Design, Benjamin Nelan and Stage Manager, Ellen Roe.
Last week, the Years 9/10 Drama elective class performed the play Dreams by Barry Kay. It was a great experience and we enjoyed performing different scenes with together. With a smaller class size, we had to act several characters in different scenes, resulting in fast costume changes from one character to another. It was interesting to see what our Drama class was capable of, as we put together a very amazing and entertaining performance. Overall, the whole class enjoyed being involved in the play, and we were very grateful for everyone who helped put it together. Zara Marino and Beth Milford

Spirit of NAIDOC Week
Celebrated by all Australians, NAIDOC Week is a great opportunity to learn more about Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander communities. In Library this week, classes discussed the 2022 theme of NAIDOC Week, Show Up! Stand Up! Get Up! We also talked about the images created by artist, Ryhia Dank, a young Gudanji/Wakaja artist from the Northern Territory. We noticed the flags and symbols used in the artwork including emu and kangaroo tracks, waterholes and meeting places. Afterwards, we made a number chart using palawa kani and Aboriginal symbols.

JSSATIS Cross Country
A big day out was had by our girls at the JSSATIS Cross Country. A lot of confidence was gained from the All Schools Cross Country the week prior, confirmation that two months of hard work was paying off and this carried through to the final event of the Cross Country season.
A sea of orange filled the top placings but, more importantly, Fahan girls were seen digging deep when it hurt and supporting their teammates, giving their all in a challenging event.
The girls know that best efforts are all they can control and all that is asked for but to have 5 out of the top 14 places in the Year 3, 6 out of the top 14 places in the Year 4 and 6 out of the top 14 places in the Year 5 is quite incredible. Not to leave the Year 6’s out, as on any other year their set of results would have topped the day!
Below are the final results:
![](https://fahanschool.schoolzineplus.com/_file/media/5566/screen_shot_2022_07_07_at_8.42.49_am.png)
Also, many thanks goes to Year 11 student, Ella Atkins, and Jo Banks-Smith who have worked with the girls on Fridays when I haven’t been able to get in.
Whilst on the topic of Cross Country, the team results have now been officially posted from the Primary All Schools Cross Country. The team results are calculated from the total placing score from each school’s top 3 runners, something that historically is difficult for a smaller school, as it is a test of depth. In saying that, huge congratulations goes to our 10yrs old team of Maggie Davies, Bianca Lampkin-Smith and Olive Smith, who came in 1st place and another huge congratulations to our 11 yrs old team of Milla Gorringe, Evie Essex and Anna McCallum who also came in 1st place. These girls will have their 1st place medals presented at this Friday’s assembly. Our 9yrs old team finished 12th and our 12 yr old team finished 5th; both excellent efforts. As this competition is open to any school in the state and with over 30 schools in each event, these efforts are quite outstanding.
The All Schools State Cross Country Championships had official photographers who photographed every race and believe they captured a photo of every student who participated. Access to the site is via this link:www.photographtasmania.com.au/events. Families can then select either the Primary or Secondary School's event, then select the race that the student competed in. Digital images start at $4 and prints start at $4.50.
Junior Hockey
The Junior Hockey season came to a conclusion on Saturday.
A big thank you goes to our coaches Jane Beaumont, Michael Robertson, James Seddon, Emily Hogan and student coaches, Audrey Bullard, Bridie Perrott, Georgia Grant and Charlotte Wilson, who have braved early mornings at Cornelian Bay and training sessions at Fahan during lunch hours. The teams progressed nicely through the roster, with the Half Field team in particular finishing off strongly with a come-from-behind victory in their last game.
Junior Basketball
Training for the Junior Basketball season has commenced with a get together this week, to assess numbers etc. Team training with coaches will commence early next term. Many thanks to those parents and staff who have put their hand up to be involved with a team.

Community - Monster Book Fair
As part of the community service element of the Lumina 9 program, students have been working with Variety in support of their annual Monster Book Fair.
Students started weeks ago in small groups unloading hundreds of boxes of books and sorting them into categories at a Cambridge warehouse. This played to many of their strengths and a newfound delight for industrial sticky tape by some. From here, students regrouped at PW1 and supported the “bump in” of the actual event. The hundreds of boxed, now categorised books, were unloaded from pallets and the students arranged them with meticulous care.
One evidence-based way to build the wellbeing of self is through service to others. In amongst the unpacking, stacking, chatting and box collapsing, there were many opportunities to build wellbeing through pondering the positive impact we were contributing to the many families in need who rely on the funds raised.
Special mention on the day to the following:
Creative sorting:
Matilda and Beth for colorfully organising the children’s books
Box rippers of the day:
Mrs Buchanan and Poppy for saving the planet
The fast and furious:
Amelie, Jemima, Mia and Imogen for the most efficient book stacking
Arranging to Perfection:
Natalie, Emily and Evie for arranging the books neatly and carefully
Absolute Muscles:
Lucy and Chloe PJ for their physical prowess
PR Queens:
Betsy and Maggie for their on the spot interview skills
The box hider:
Stella for having fun and hiding in the boxes
Fahan Courier Service:
Georgie and Zara for their amazing trolly skills and delivering ALL the boxes to each category
Superstar effort by all students involved.
Mrs Alli Williamson

Community - Connections within our School environment
With the world settling down to a new type of “normal” we are seeking to build on our connections within the Fahan School Community.
These adventures include weekly visits to the library where we choose books and listen to stories. We are also lucky enough to be included in the Kinder to Year 2 assembly which the children look forward to with great excitement as they see some of their friends from after school care perform and present on stage.
Recently we also had the privilege of visiting the science laboratory where Dr Stewart was kind enough to show us some fish in a large tank, some stuffed animals on loan from TMAG and even performed a magical trick! Our children are benefiting greatly from these experiences.
When we are playing in the rivulet, we can also hear the senior girls enjoying their music lessons and we pause in our play to listen more carefully to identify each instrument that we can hear.
All these wonderful connections enrich our program and provide lovely extensions for our children and their interests.
