Principal's Report
![](https://fahanschool.schoolzineplus.com/_file/media/3551/img_6803_cropped.jpg)
On Friday, I was delighted to see the love of books clearly evident as our Junior School students celebrated Book Week. There is always a great deal of thought involved in choosing costumes and great excitement about the joyful Book Week assembly and this year was no exception.
Last week was also a big week of camps for all of Years 9 and 10 students. As you will read below, five camps were on offer and I have only heard positive reports of the experiences, even though the Corinna camp was a bit wet! The purpose of camps is to push students beyond their comfort zone so they can be prepared to be brave and have a go. The benefits of camps are many, including being able to see many areas of our beautiful state that they may not otherwise experience. While it is a huge logistical exercise to organise and run camps, the benefits far outweigh any of these challenges and I thank all involved.
Last week, I received a lovely email from a gentleman from Ireland who, when reading the London Times obituary about Judith Durham AO, learnt that she attended Fahan School in Hobart, Tasmania. He took the time to write to me of his connection with the village of Fahan in Ireland, from where the family of Miss Audrey Morphett, one of the founders of our School, hailed. My correspondent explained that he had a beach house at Lough Swilly (known as the ‘lake of shadows’), which looks across at Fahan and had also spent his childhood in the area. This reminded me that our connections with others across the globe can be far reaching and sometimes unexpected. I am sure that Miss Morphett would have been thrilled by the connection.
In staffing news, I am pleased to announce the appointment of Mr Chris Wood as Head of Innovation and Technology. Chris comes to us as a highly experienced teacher from The Friends’ School, where he has taught Technology subjects for many years. Chris is excited to be joining us at Fahan and will commence early in Term 4. We also welcome back Ms Georgie Vozar as Art Aide in the Senior School, and Ms Lillian Gath, who will be assisting with Junior School Art.
At the end of October we will be farewelling Mrs Lisa Seddon. Lisa’s outstanding skills as a classroom teacher and her deep knowledge of the curriculum will be much missed by her students and colleagues and we wish her all the very best with her new position as a Senior Policy Officer at TASC. I will announce her replacement for her Years 9 and 10 classes in due course.
Finally, there are only four weeks until the Fahan Twilight Fair on Friday 30 September. This event is always a highlight of the calendar and a wonderful opportunity to connect with our community. An enormous amount of effort goes into planning the Fair to ensure it is an enjoyable time for all. Could I please ask that if you have any items you wish to donate such as books; items for op shop stall; second hand clothes; bottles of wine for adult lucky dip; items for the plant stall and prizes for the chocolate wheel, that you contact the P&F on pandf@fahan.tas.edu.au or you simply drop the items into the School Office.
I hope you can all join us for the Twilight Fair on the last evening of this term!
Best wishes
Meg Lawson
Open Morning for Prospective Parents
![](https://fahanschool.schoolzineplus.com/_file/media/6470/fb_banner_open_morning.jpg)
As current parents and carers, you are our best ambassadors and we appreciate your positive word of mouth in sharing your experiences at Fahan School.
If you know of any families with school-aged girls we encourage you to let them know about our Open Morning on Friday 9 September. This event has been tailored for families who do not have children enrolled at Fahan and will include a full tour of our stunning campus, as well as presentations by our Principal, Meg Lawson, and key staff.
You can direct friends and colleagues to our website for more information:

Important Traffic Information
In 2022, Fahan School, through traffic engineering consultants Midson Traffic, investigated traffic and pedestrian movements within and around the School campus to produce an access and travel plan. The report has been completed and notes a number of recommendations which the School has implemented or is in the progress of further engaging the Council towards providing. An future EdSmart notice will cover further details later this term.
Importantly, the report notes the internal roads and car parking areas associated with the School as overall operating safely.
As with most schools, however, drop-off and pick-up activity, particularly outside the School grounds, remains a key ongoing concern. As a result, we would like to see some improvement in certain key locations and this notice provides a traffic update on areas where your assistance is required to achieve the desired level of safety for our community.
- The Fisher Avenue/Hampshire Road Junction is not the School’s preferred pick up and drop off location for students (refer to the map below for a visual representation):
- Parents picking up and dropping students off in this location should be aware there have been near misses here and are reminded to support safe traffic and pedestrian movement at all times.
- Congestion on the street presents additional hazards, as this area does not easily accommodate high numbers of students being picked up and dropped off safely
- Parents are reminded to drive with extreme caution at all times, obey traffic rules including requirements that restrict stopping within 10 meters of an uncontrolled intersection.
- Parents are also reminded of our School values and to always be courteous to our neighbours by not parking, stopping, or otherwise obstructing, resident driveway access.
- Our main pick up and drop off location is within the School grounds and drivers are reminded to drive with caution, including the requirement to not overtake within the designated pick-up and drop-off zone.
- Our preferred alternative location for pick up and drop off outside the School is on Coolabah Road and is particularly useful for Junior School students.
- All drivers moving though the Fisher Lane/Walford Road Junction area are reminded to drive with caution particularly at the intersection.
The School will be engaging further with Council on possible parking restrictions that are intended to better support pick-up and drop-off in this location, however, it will always likely have some inherent limitations.

The safety of our students and all in our community is of paramount concern to the School. If you have any queries in relation to traffic at Fahan School, please contact our Compliance, Safety, HR & Privacy Officer, Mr Steve Harris, at harriss@fahan.tas.edu.au.

We Need Your Help!
We are only four weeks away from the Fahan Twilight Fair for 2022 that will take place on the last day of term, Friday 30 September. The Fair Committee has been working hard to provide a memorable event for you all and now is the time to get involved!
Fair Meeting - Wednesday 7 September at 7:00pm
We invite all stallholders and anyone who wishes to volunteer or have some involvement in the Fair to an important meeting next Wednesday evening in Nateby House. As Edsmart will be sent on Monday with details and a Zoom link.
We are still seeking donations so please, look in the pantry, the basement, the attic, the wardrobe, or the garden shed for something you never got around to using.
If you are able to donate toward any of the following, we would love to hear from you. We can also use disposables such as packaging, cutlery, cups and glasses, plates and napkins, not to mention condiments and the like.
- Items for the Chocolate Wheel
- Items for the Adult Lucky Dip (eg wine etc)
- Plants for the plant stall
- Cakes and sweets for the cake stall
- Second hand clothes and books for the Op Shop Stall
Please contact Sabina at the P&F on pandf@fahan.tas.edu.au.
If, instead, you feel you can assist by offering your time on the day, this would also be enormously appreciated. There will be a number of fun activities that parents and family members might wish to be involved with - it doesn't have to be for the duration of the Fair, as we will take what you can give.
One last thing. The best support you can offer is to just attend the Fair, so please put off the holiday plans by one more day if you can. We are excited to see you all there!
Mr John Padas
Fair Coordinator
Learning about Maths
In Maths, Year 3 students have been learning about data collection and graphing. We have looked at why we collect information and the different ways we can show information. We really loved conducting our own individual surveys! This is what we did:
- First we each chose a topic that we were interested in finding out about.
- We asked all the people in our class a question and carefully recorded their answers using tally marks and numbers.
- We then created a column graph. We tried really hard to make our graphs as neat and clear as possible so that they would be easy for others to read.
- Finally, we wrote about what we learnt from our graphs, and shared these interpretations with each other.
Brilliant work, everyone!

Learning about Everyday Materials
In Science, the Year 1 class has been investigating how everyday materials can change and become more useful. After looking closely at materials that stretch, bend and twist, we attempted to combine all three actions into one activity.
Mrs Parsons baked some large pretzels and after examining the process, each of the students attempted to replicate the pretzel shape by stretching, bending and twisting their own piece of playdough. While the task was initially quite tricky and at times a little overwhelming, perseverance prevailed, and the outcome was terrific!
We are now on the lookout for more objects in everyday life that combine stretching, bending and twisting.

Learning about Puppetry
On Tuesday 30 August the Junior School were fortunate to watch Terrapin Puppet’s most recent performance of The Paper Escaper.
Students from Kindergarten through to Year 6 all enjoyed the wonderful non-verbal show. Creative sets, fabulous puppets and clever puppeteers enabled the paper puppets to come to life during the entertaining performance.

Learning about Reading
Fahan Junior School Celebrates Children’s Book Week - Dreaming With Eyes Open
On Friday 26 August, students from Pre-Kinder to Year 6 celebrated Book Week with great enthusiasm. CBCA Book Week is Australia’s longest-running children’s festival. In Library, Junior School students spent time reading and studying books nominated for this year’s Children’s Book Council Award. Students talked about their thinking, how they connected with the characters and the themes emerging from the stories. Students also made connections through discussion, writing and art.
Students listened to Dharug woman, Jasmine Seymour, talk about her inspiration for this year’s artwork. “When I was thinking about the theme and the poster and what I wanted it to be, I wanted to have my story, the Dharug story, represented in that poster.” The poster features colours, fauna and flora native to the Hawkesbury region and which are also prevalent in traditional stories from the area.” (National Indigenous Times) This inspired a drawing competition conducted by Year 6 inviting students to sketch Australian animals.
Harriet, from Kinder, said she loved the Book Week cake. It had teal-coloured icing and was decorated with monarch butterflies.
Imogen from Prep loved reading with her Buddies on the Junior School Green after lunch.
Bonnie from Year 5 said, “Book Week was really fun! I dressed up as Philippa Fisher and the Fairy’s Promise.”
Year 6 student, Maya, said she liked dressing up with her group. Lauren, also from Year 6 reflected, “Book Week was fun! I had a great time dressing up and promoting my favourite book. It was very exciting to see other people’s costumes as well. I will miss it next year! Thank you to the Junior School staff for hosting Book Week and providing the very yummy cake!”
This year’s extraordinary cake was once again created by Cakes By Eve.
We would like to thank parents and K – 6 staff for their support of this fabulous event.

Spirit of Buddies
Pre-Kinder and Year 5
Our 2022 Fahan Pre-Kinder children were introduced to the Buddy System last week which is a wonderful program where they were each paired with a school-aged child who becomes their ‘buddy’.
The purpose of this program is for younger and older children to build a sense of belonging and community which is promoted through the social and support network built within this program. The two programs came together to effectively pair the children for participation in a series of experiences which were Pre-Kinder led. The older children were eager to take on mentoring roles and proudly used clear dialogue to break down barriers. They moved around the room with their charges who took opportunities to identify structured and free areas of play they might enjoy doing with their buddy.
During this time, observations were made and interactions were encouraged and input sought from the older children in overseeing how relationships and were developing. This program will benefit the growth of self-confidence in the older children while creating a positive and collaborative environment within the School.

Kinder and Year 6
Year 6 were very excited to meet their Kindergarten buddies recently and share their favourite books for Book Week. The buddy program is a special way to foster relationships throughout the School and both older and younger children gain so much from the experience. Year 6 and Kindergarten will continue to meet regularly to share activities and stories, to play and laugh together, and to create connections that hopefully will last throughout their schooling.
I really enjoyed experiencing what Kinders do in class and comparing it to what we do in class. Ruby W
It was so much fun being able to meet our buddies. I loved being able to spend time with them. Rose
My buddy’s name is Margaret and she does ballet. I liked reading to her, we read Mr Huff. Keira
It was fun hanging out with our buddies. My buddy’s name is Bella. She is very funny and nice. Isabelle
I liked reading to my buddy. My buddy’s name is Beshi. I read her a Mr Men book and she has some as well. Florence

Year 2 and Year 5W
This term has seen the return of our Buddies program. Year 2 have buddied up with 5W and over the past several weeks they have been having some wonderful time getting to know each other. The squeals of delight from the Year 2s when they see the Year 5 students walking towards them for their Thursday afternoon get together has been priceless. The Junior School Buddy Program is a wonderful program that builds friendships, a sense of belonging, leadership and community spirit within our School.

Spirit of Connection with Tokyo Jogakkan
On 22 and 29 August, we had two Zoom sessions with the Tokyo Jogakkan (TJK) Year 5 students. During the first Zoom session, the TJK girls shared their presentations with us. All their presentations were performed live, and covered many different topics. Their presentations were performed in English, and we were very impressed by their fluency. At the end of some of the presentations, they had a quiz for us about their topic. Once all the presentations were done, there was enough time for us to ask them questions and for them to ask us questions. This was a great way for us to learn more about them and Japan and for them to learn about us and Australia.
During the second zoom session, it was our turn to share our presentations. Our presentations included videos and one live presentation spoken in English with our self-introductions spoken in Japanese. We all had different topics including teen fashion, hobbies and sports, lunchtimes at school, popular food in Australia, flora and fauna and our School uniform.
At the end of each presentation, we did a quiz. We also had enough time after the presentations for free conversation. One of the TKJ girls asked if we liked K-pop which caught Myla’s attention since she is a big K-pop fan. Some of the TJK girls then talked about their favourite songs. One of the girls said that her favourite song was ‘YES or YES’ by Twice. We were all very surprised when Myla said that it was one of her favourites too. We thought it was great for them to be able to share that connection even though they were so far away from each other.
Overall, everyone really enjoyed this experience and was sad for it to be over. We are all very excited to hopefully have this opportunity again in the future. Thank you to our Japanese teachers and the teachers at TJK for making this wonderful experience happen.

Spirit of Science and Arts Week
![](https://fahanschool.schoolzineplus.com/_file/media/6849/glass_competition_pic.jpg)
Congratulations to Year 8 student, Beatrix Burgoyne who won the Science Week Glass Competition.
This is a photo of some of the sea glass I have been collecting for a few years. If you are not sure what sea glass is here is an explanation. Sea glass is glass that has been dumped into the ocean. Then tumbled throughout the time it’s in the ocean and then washed up on the shores of many beaches to later be picked up by people like me!
Sea glass is classified as litter, so it is ok to pick up.

Spirit of Debating
Congratulations to Debating Chair, Cian Donoghue, for running such a well-organised and entertaining Debating Week. After a week of excellent arguments, the finale was a highly amusing Staff v Student debate with the theme of “Lessons should be taught by TikTok”, where Staff were the affirmative team, giving the audience plenty to laugh about. After a lively and hotly contested debate, the students were victorious and the teachers were very gracious in defeat. Everyone had a great time!
Well done to all students who participated and held some very strong topical arguments. Thank you to our adjudicators for mentoring and inspiring our speakers.

Spirit of Outdoor Education Camps
In Week 6, all Years 9 and 10 students took part in the annual Outdoor Education Camp, to either Flinders Island, Mount Cameron, Corinna, Derby or The Three Capes Walk. Each trip provided an opportunity for the students to participate in various activities. The activities were tailored to help the students develop confidence, regulate emotions, problem solve, take leadership, enhance relationships with peers, build trust and connections. It also provided an opportunity to connect with the natural wonderland that we have on our doorstep and appreciate it for all its beauty.
I would like to commend the students on their achievements throughout the week and the staff and guides that helped make these camps a memorable experience for the students.
Mrs Stacey Maley
Below are some student recounts on the week:
Flinders Island Camp
In Week 6, 12 Year 10s travelled to Flinders Island. On Sunday, we met at the airport, flew over in a small propeller plane and set up camp on the south of the island at Trousers Point. Monday was scheduled for bad weather, so we drove to Whitemark to buy food for the rest of the week, followed by a trip to the tip shop. We cooked up a vegetable stir fry for dinner. On Tuesday, we packed up our tents, got in the van and drove to the base of Mount Strzelecki, walking to the summit and back in about six hours. From the peak, you could see all over the island! Once we got back to the van, we drive for an hour up to Killiecrankie and set up camp again there, having nachos for dinner. On Wednesday we walked from Killiecrankie, around the coastline and past some pretty views and cliffs to The Docks, a beautiful bay area protected from the wind. Thursday was the best weather of the week, so we packed up again and briefly headed to the very north of the island to Northeast Beach. Despite the cold water, most of us went into the beautiful blue waters. The beach was covered in unique and colourful shells, so we had a look at those and headed back to our final campsite, Wybalenna. We stopped at the chapel and read about the history of the location and the Aboriginal people that lived here. We took some photos of a friendly wombat before heading to our campsite, watching the sunset and seeing shooting stars while stargazing. On Friday morning we packed up our campsite for the final time, boarded the plane and arrived in Hobart.

Mount Cameron Camp
Last week, 16 Year 9 students travelled to the northeast of Tasmania to Mount Cameron. On the first day, we were based around the camp doing team-building activities such as the sea saw, spider web, A-frame and zipline. The zipline was amazing. The next day it was raining but we carried on and went to the east coast to see some Aboriginal living sites. It was very fascinating and we saw a wombat on the beach! On the second beach that we visited we had to jump across a stream, where we all got very wet! We then climbed Mount William (Wukalina) and were rewarded with a beautiful view of the east coast. On the way home, we stopped by Little Blue Lake. It was very intriguing to learn why it is blue. On the way back to camp we got a surprise and Mrs Heather bought us icecream! The next day we woke up to the perfect weather to walk up Mount Cameron. As we made our way up the 550m tall mountain, we saw some very picturesque views. The weather was stunning, and we walked up in t-shirts and shorts the whole way. When we got to the top, we could see all the way out to Flinders Island and some other islands in the distance, and celebrated with mint slices. Everyone agreed it was the best day of the camp. We got back to camp, had dinner and it was time for a challenge! In the darkness of the night, we had to walk across a 30m wire. We were challenged to be blindfolded while we made our way back across the wire. The next day, we packed our bags and made our way home.
We all had a great time and would like to thank the teachers and guides who took us on the camp.

Three Capes Walk - Group 1
Our journey began with a quick bus ride to the Port Arthur Historic Site, followed by a windy but enjoyable Pennicott Wilderness boat ride. After seeing many different animals on the trip, we had a wet landing to get on shore to start the walk. After wading through the shallow water and getting our gear back we set off.
Day 1 was only a 4km walk but felt like it took for ever. There were seats along the way that all had a story that we read. This gave us well deserved breaks along the way. Upon seeing the hut on day 1 we all cheered and immediately picked up our pace. Soon we arrived at Surveyors Hut. That night we got to know eachother better over a spicy chilli dinner and then turned in for the night.
Day 2 we set off for at 9:00am for our 11km hike. We were a little bit tired as we were woken during the night to snorers. Our first big challenge was climbing Arthurs Peak. We made it to the bottom of the hill for a couple of kilometres until we reached a good lunch spot. On Day 2 we experienced many different weather situations - one moment the sun was shining, the next the hail came down like knives. We persisted on and eventually arrived at Munro Hut around 2:30pm and played many different card games and listened to the many interesting conversation of our fellow walkers. We had many laughs which resulted in somewhat of a good sleep. We had earplugs to drown out the snorers!
Day 3 we woke at 5:30am for the biggest day yet - 19km!! We started walking at 7:00am and walked and walked until we reached the blade. We slowly made our way up the blade, looking left and right to just see the blue ocean below. We walked down the blade to then walk to Cape Pillar where we experienced amazing views. We walked back along the track to get back to Munro Hut where we met up with the other group. We stayed at Munro for a while because it was pouring. We then set off again with our packs to Retakunna where we stayed the night.
Day 4 was our last day, and we had a deadline of 2:30pm to get to Fortescue Bay. We started our walk by conquering Mount Fortescue. Estella was paranoid of being bitten by a leech after reading Blue Velvet Lounge which was another story stop. From there we read our stories and walked out to Cape Hauy to see the amazing ocean. There were many stairs to climb in the glorious sun. We walked to Fortescue Bay and ended our journey with wonderful memories that we will remember forever.
Thank you to Mitch and Dr Fitzpatrick (the M & Ms) for looking after us and making this time so enjoyable.
Derby – Mountain Biking
The Derby trip was lots of fun,
We loved riding in the sun.
All the adventures on the bike,
We began to like.
Dinners hit the spot,
Everyone fell off a lot.
Isis enjoyed her collisions with trees,
Keala found the riding a breeze.
Sophie took a tumble,
Riding before lunch made our tummies grumble.
Coming on the Derby camp was a good choice,
Although Keala lost her voice.
Scategories was the way to go,
We struggled to find a food starting with O.
Prue opted for orange clothes,
Georgette’s riding put on some shows.
Nat was sad without her phone,
Thankfully nobody broke a bone.
We turned the cabins into a homey nest,
Glad we all showed a negative test.
Cabin life was the best,
Glad we had somewhere nice to rest.
We felt bad for anyone in a tent,
Because the Dales is what we decided to rent.
The mud on the trails was pretty sticky,
With our snacks we were very picky.
Nell became a pump track girl,
Scribbles gave the trails a whirl.
The Dales of Derby was the best place to stay,
I guess everyone else had it okay.

Spirit - Junior School Sport
Junior Athletics
The Athletics season is now in full swing. The girls have been working hard in their PE lessons and have just finished competing in the High Jump. This is an event that many of them do love but it does pose some wonderful challenges, both physically and mentally, as the girls strive to do their best. It is lovely to see how supportive they are of each other throughout the lessons in these situations.
Below are the dates for the upcoming Carnivals.
Junior House Athletics
When: Thursday 22 September
Time: 10:30am to 2:45pm
Where: Domain Athletics Centre
JSSATIS Athletics
When: Thursday 10 November
Time: 10:00am to 2:45pm

SSATIS Athletics Carnival
The Southern SATIS Athletics Carnival will be held on Tuesday 6 September at the Domain Athletics Centre.
Team members should be in Fahan Sports uniform and meet on the front steps of the School by 8:15am on this day. Students will be transported to the Domain and will be dismissed from the Domain at the conclusion of the Carnival, at around 4:30pm. No buses will be returning to Fahan at the end of the day.
Please remember the following:
- food, snacks and drink for the whole day.
- Fahan athletic singlet, school bike shorts or sports shorts. Please note that compression garments (skins) are not part of the Fahan Athletic uniform. Girls risk disqualification if they are incorrectly attired.
Following the SSATIS Carnival, a team of a reduced number will be selected for the SATIS Carnival to be held at St Leonard’s Athletics Centre, Launceston on Saturday 17 September. The team will be selected based on performances at the Southern Carnival and a team list will be released soon after that event.
All parents and supporters are welcome to attend any of these Carnivals and I would be pleased to hear from any parents able to help out as a volunteer official. Please contact me at bankssmithj@fahan.tas.edu.au. A schedule is available through the Tree under Senior Sport Online.
Rowing
The ‘Introduction to Rowing’ session is on tomorrow, Saturday 3 September. All Under 13 rowers will meet at SBRC at Marieville Esplanade. We look forward to welcoming them to Fahan Rowing and hope everyone enjoys the morning.
Cross Country
Congratulations to Charlotte Jones, Charlotte McNeill and Annabelle Fry who competed in the Australian Cross Country Championships in Adelaide last weekend. They each gave their best effort and enjoyed the experience of running in a National competition.
Equestrian
Best wishes to Jemima Ellis-Maguire (Year 8) and Ruby Smith (Year 6) who are competing in the Inter School Horse Trials on Sunday 4 September.
