Welcome to a new year at Fahan School! I hope that you all had a restful break with your families and that 2023 has started positively for you. This year we have welcomed over 50 new families to our Fahan Community. It was lovely to be able to meet with new parents at the convivial Welcome Dinner in the first week of School.
Also in week one we held the Investiture Assembly for our Year 12 student leaders. This occasion provides us with the opportunity to officially recognise all of our Year 12s, including those holding the extra responsibility of a Chair position, into their new roles as school leaders. As leaders, our Year 12 students have an important responsibility to not only lead by example, but to support and encourage their peers. They will have opportunities to take on leadership roles within various School events and initiatives, and we look forward to seeing their contributions as the year progresses.
We welcome the Class of 2023 and congratulate our Year 12 Leadership Group:
Head Girl: Harriet Badenach
Deputy Head Girls: Grace Hooper and Charlotte Jones
Arts Chair: Sienna Woodford
Communications Chair: Roxanne Padas
Community Chair: Aria Ritz
Junior School Chair: Emma Thompson
Sport Chair: Ella Atkins
Fenton Chair: Anna Edwards
Franklin Chair: Molly Bradfield
Freycinet Chair: Molly Crosby
In week two we enjoyed the Academic Honours Assembly, in which we welcomed back some of our 2022 graduates of Fahan, to celebrate their outstanding achievements and discover the pathways they are embarking on. Sarah Hodgman and Chloe Essex joined us in person, while Laura Cooper, Lillian McShane and Matilda Huys provided us with short videos, sharing some excellent advice with our student cohort, and showing us where they are now situated. These are always inspirational assemblies, and all enjoyed seeing where these people are now.
We have certainly been busy since the year has commenced in all areas of the school. Students in Years 6 and 7 have participated in Outdoor Education camps to the East Ccoast, with stunning weather making these events especially enjoyable.
Swim and Survive has commenced in the Junior School this week. This program aims to educate our younger students on water safety, and help them to develop essential swimming skills. We are excited to see our students progress and grow in confidence throughout the program.
I wish all our rowers the best of luck at the Schools Regatta this weekend and we are looking forward to a successful and rewarding term ahead.
Best wishes
Meg Lawson

Learning in the Fahan Vacation Program 2022/2023
Fahan’s 2022/2023 summer vacation program has allowed for children to shift their focus and engage in a complex range of beneficial and rewarding tasks.
Our program is based on our ideology and principles and is child-led which helps children to gain independence, build resilience, grow confidence, expand their problem-solving skills and make new friends. The experiences offered have followed our philosophy that develops the whole child to form community networks and stimulate their physical, social, emotional, cognitive and life skills.
A constant is our daily excursion to the rivulet which promotes self-discovery and an understanding of our eco system.
Over the summer period, educators have delivered a range of activities that link the human and natural world. Excursions offered, including Bonorong Park, Richmond Berry Farm, Big Monkey Theatre and the Huonville Pool, were presented with opportunity to build life skills around road safety and the different immediate environments. Exposure through exploration also helps further develop children’s confidence.
Outdoor games such as soccer and dance were valuable activities, helping children to develop patience, control their emotions and learn that it takes time to improve physical skills.
The children also enjoyed cooking experiences where they were able to practice science, maths and language skills.
A delicious afternoon tea of cakes and scones was prepared by the children and educators to facilitate 'Café Fahan'. Family members were invited to enjoy this experience with us.
Our continued sustainability practises saw us extend this with a gardening experience to help the children learn about the responsibility of caring for plants.
These structured learning experiences are designed to extend on the children’s affinity for the arts and culture in a safe, happy and informative environment.
Kind regards
Lisa, Kelly, Vivienne and Moya

Learning about Maths
This term, Years 1 and 2 have set aside time to regularly work together on a variety of Maths games. Our first session was a huge success with the girls pairing up and enjoying a ‘race to 100’ with dice, counters and a 100 chart.
The older girls were a wonderful support for their younger peers, and it was interesting to watch the different strategies that were used to quickly add up numbers. The classroom was filled with plenty of constructive chatter and many cheers were heard as the girls beat their opponent to reach 100.
We are looking forward to many terrific sessions ahead.

Learning about Narrative Writing
What a fabulous start to the year we have had in Year 3! We have loved seeing our friends again after the holidays, and welcoming Eve and Iris to our class.
This week we have been really enjoying writing our own narratives (stories). When we have finished writing our drafts, we are going to type them up on our iPads and add illustrations.
My story is called 'The Revenge of the Villains'. - Sarah Seddon
I am writing about a little girl called Lacy and her dog Teddy who get lost in the bush! - Tamsin O'Connor
My story is set under the ocean. - Bobbie Tennick
My story is about a person called Harry and a mermaid called Coral. - Isabel Sikk

Learning with Buddies in Year 4
On 10 February, the Year 4 class went to the Year 1 classroom to visit our buddies. Mr Hodgman and Mrs Parsons explained we would be making bookmarks for our buddies. Then Mrs Parsons put us into pairs. It was really fun. We spent about ten minutes making and designing our bookmarks. After we had finished, we put our bookmarks on the table under the TV. Then we played a game when Mrs Parsons clapped and we had to try and clap with her. It was quite tricky. It was time to go all too soon. Some of the younger buddies didn't want us to leave and we didn't want to leave either!

Learning about Swim and Survive
On Monday 19 February, Years 3 and 4 had their first session of Swim and Survive.
We were so excited we jumped up and down on our seats in the bus.
When we arrived at the pool, the swim instructors assigned us into groups. We started with the basic things: freestyle, backstroke and more.
Some of us already knew these, but we all enjoyed the experience in the end.

Learning about Survival Strategies
The Year 5 students’ class novel this term is The Explorer by author, Katherine Rundell. It follows the adventure of four children who are forced to survive in the Amazon jungle. In response to some survival homework, Michael Robertson (Olivia Robertson’s father) offered to speak to the girls about his survival knowledge relating to his 30 years’ experience as a Military Pilot.
The girls were mesmerised by his stories of survival training exercises and the real-life survival situations that he had experienced.
He talked about the Survival Priorities of food, water, shelter and fire and how these priorities, whilst all essential, can vary in importance depending on the environmental situation. The different needs of surviving in arid, coastal, jungle and snow environments were all discussed. The girls learnt about survival rafts, how to make solar water purifiers and the basics of building a snow tent. Whilst hearing about the importance of remaining hydrated, looking after personal hygiene and selecting edible food, the most important message for the girls was the positive power of morale. Looking out for yourself, each other and keeping a positive outlook is an essential key to survival.
We thank Michael for his time and sharing his impressive knowledge.

Learning about Year 7 at Orientation Week
Orientation week was great fun. We played a lot of games to get to know each other such as human knots, a fashion parade and pinata. We all received a welcome bag which had the names and photos of all the teachers, a map of the School, tips from past year 7s, and of course...a welcome cookie! All the staff and students were very friendly and approachable, everyone was continuously trying their best to welcome and include everyone. Molly Smith
Going into the first week at Fahan was quite daunting, especially being new to living in Tassie but the teachers were very inviting. We learnt our house chants, made pasta towers and played lots of games. The newspaper fashion show was so much fun. Even though I was nervous, I had a great week. Claudia Grigor

Learning about Science in the Senior School
It has been a busy few weeks in the Science labs at Fahan, getting our students back into the swing of learning. The Year 7s have been learning all about the branches of Science, the Year 8s have been practising key skills such as using the Bunsen burners and applying the particle theory to explain matter. The Year 9 classes have been studying sexual and asexual reproduction, dissected flowers and had an amazing talk from guest speaker Fahan parent, Eva de Wit, (Embryologist) about all things IVF.
Half of the Year 10s have been learning about the origins of the Universe and the other half the Periodic Table in detail. The senior Biology class have started the year learning all about cells and using the microscopes, the Chemistry class have developed some very good titration skills and the Physical Sciences class has been learning more about atomic structure and stoichiometry. The 9/10 Science Enrichment class have worked on a series of STEM challenges including building towers, catapults and bionic hands.

Learning about Legal Studies
“I didn’t think politics would be this interesting, to be honest” chimed a year 12 student at the end of our second lesson on the Westminster system. Year 11 and 12 Legal Studies students have started the year learning about liberal democratic ideals and how the Westminster system operates in Australia. We have considered the difference between parliament and government; the powers of the Governor General; what is meant by ‘responsible’ government; what goes on during Question Time and Senate Estimates, and why a separation of powers is important for the rule of law. Next on our list is Federalism and we will be looking at some of the most important High Court cases in recent history.

L-R: Jessica Sypkes, Molly Bradfield and Louis Smith
After discussing constitutional conventions, one of our students (Molly Bradfield) made an elaborate cake depicting the Australian Constitution!
Learning about titration techiniques
This term, the Year 12 Chemistry students are perfecting their titration techniques. They are studying oxidation and reduction processes, which include processes such as rusting, the browning of fruit, and even photosynthesis in plants. As part of their investigations, they set up a titration experiment to measure the amount of sulphur dioxide in two different types of Tasmanian white wine varieties.
Titration is important in many processes such as measuring contaminants in water courses, testing for accuracy of vitamin labels and confirming the presence of different substances in our food. It involves a reaction between two different solutions that usually results in a colour change. The students are learning to carefully measure and weigh the reactants. They repeat the experiments until they can duplicate their results. So next time you are wondering about how much sulphur dioxide is in your wine, come and ask the Year 12 Chemistry class!

Spirit of Sailing Camp
On Thursday 2 February, 10 Fahan students attended a Sailing Training Camp in preparation for team sailing in 2023. Students had to deal with some challenging conditions with strong winds and choppy water.
The coach for the day was Fahan Alumna, Chloe Abel, who did a great job of taking sailors through a range of tactical situations and helping them to practise these on the water.
Sailors were practising team sailing tactics with a focus on boat handling and communication between helm and crew.
The students worked really well as a team helping each other to rig and launch boats. There was a great atmosphere amongst the team members which bodes well for the upcoming sailing season.

Spirit of Year 7 Camp
This week our Year 7s set off to Kelvedon to enjoy a camping adventure together.
The time away was an opportunity for the students to get to know their peers whilst at the same time participating in a variety of structured outdoor activities based on teamwork and resilience building. 7O set off Tuesday to Thursday, sharing a crossover day and night on Wednesday, with 7N staying until Friday.
Over the course of three days, each group enjoyed raft building, volleyball, mountain bike riding, bushwalking (uphill!), team building challenges, snorkelling, sand sculpture competitions, delicious food and amazing weather!
Thank you to all the staff who created this wonderful outdoor experience for our Year 7 girls.
Some of their favourite experiences were:
I really, really liked the adventure, everyday there were different experiences. The road trip and singing on the bus was really great. I also loved mountain biking and playing cricket. Nina Davidson
The Class vs Class volleyball tournament was really fun at the beach. It was such a close game, and it ended up as a tie. It was so great on Wednesday night being all together and I really enjoyed creating our sand sculptures. Ruby Smith
Staying in a tent is always fun! I really enjoyed putting up the tents and sleeping outdoors. There were so many adventures. I particularly liked mountain biking through the dam and the cricket and frisbee games. Charlotte Lord

Spirit of English Writing at Year 7 Camp
Kelvedon Camp
The students in Year 7 English were asked to write about an aspect of their camp experience using as many interesting adjectives as they could. Here is a selection!
Bike Riding by Mathilda Brown
It was quite nervous to go on the bike ride at first. I thought we would be riding up massive, rocky, challenging hills, and speeding down slopes as fast as anything. However, it was nothing like I ever thought in a million years! It was fun, easy-going and overall, just an enjoyable ride. We went down a hill that wasn’t too hard and was exciting how fast you sped down! The way back was a little harder, but when you went downhill again you got that flying feeling. We went down a big hill, and some people went down further and came back, trespassing through the river. It looked extremely hard and I’m glad I didn’t do it! Then, one after the
other, we headed up the hill back to the top. Our challenge was to make it all the way to the top without stopping once. It was an ambitious and possibly unsuccessful goal, but I made it! We had a group photo and had the opportunity to continue an extra ride, if you felt like it. I was one of the four who stayed, and it was worth it! We just went back and did the same trail we had done before, without the big, treacherous hill. I made the loop twice, before heading back for some competitive, hilarious cricket and much-needed snacks. I then got a chance to go on a third ride, which I was hesitant to do at first but then agreed. We went
a back to the loop once then headed to the front gate, which was an extremely bumpy track to get to. We ended up meeting the 7N class, which was a thrill! We followed them back to camp on our bikes behind the slow ‘Bargain Bus’. It was, to my despair, just as bumpy on the way back. Overall it was very fun on the bikes and I’m glad I participated in all of the amazing, thrilling rides!
The Beach by Essie Burke
The smooth sand stretched out to the edge of the blue water, which was churning with waves which crashed onto the shore, spraying cold, salty water. We raced into the blue, laughing and splashing wildly, leaping over waves enthusiastically. Some people dived onto the cold straight away, but most hung back, shivering but still running with just as much excitement. Waves upon waves smashed down loudly and with plenty of force, as people jumped and swam over them, screaming loudly, but not from fear, but from pure joy. Cold, salty wind stung at our drenched clothes and wet hair, making us shake violently and our teeth chatter uncontrollably. People on inflatable paddle boards came past, waves coming down with enough force to upend them, screaming in shock but also excitement. More massive waves kept coming, so we took the opportunity to dive into them. Cold water rushed past us and up our noses, stinging painfully on fresh cuts and scratches, but it was worth it. We loved the beach wholeheartedly.
Tent Adjectives by Nina Davidson
Once the moon shot into the sky, watching over us, our warm faces turned cold. Our worn-out bodies slowly slumped towards our tents. Phoebe, Ruby and I talked and laughed until we heard footsteps around our tent, a booming voice coming from a teacher bellowed, “Alright girls time to settle down and turn out the lights.” We snuggled into our sleeping bags and tossed and turned until we were tired. I fell into a deep slumber, the warmth of my sleeping bag cradled me, like a hug. I woke up feeling refreshed at 6:30 in the peak of the morning, the orange sunrise belting into my tent. That was one of the best sleeps I’ve ever had.
Bike Riding by Felicity Morgan
My mind was racing, I was terrified. Each footstep pounded the ground squishing the drying grass below. The bright red bikes shined ominously in the distance. I was scared out of my skin, but I continued to approach the bikes wishing I could stay on the ground just for a moment longer. My legs seemed to stiffen as I placed each foot on each one of the pitch-black pedals. My breath began to speed up. I can do this, I whispered to myself in my best attempt at a calming tone. Pedals began to spin, gears squeaked as helmets clicked on, as bike after bike began speeding off into the distance. My pedals turned in one slow circle motion gradually speeding up and I was off. Wind hit my face and my hair swished behind me. We biked over rocks past vineyards up and down hills. We saw beautiful peaceful landscapes, rivers and mountains. But before I knew it I was once more on the ground and my feet were placed firmly on the dead grass once again. “I had done it!” was my first thought after I had hopped off the bike and best of all I had enjoyed myself.
Camp Cooking by Yifan Wang
On Tuesday night my brilliant classmate Bailey and I happily prepared for ourselves a mouth-watering dinner on the Trangia. We were given dehydrated Spaghetti Bolognese and we boiled it with water on the silver Trangia. After our meal was cooked, we joyfully munched on it. It was amazingly delicious and very flavorful. We also loved sprinkling it with grated parmesan cheese that melted onto the spaghetti. After enjoying our lovely dinner, we washed our disgustingly dirty dishes in warm water and soap. This was my most memorable dinner from my fantastic camp.
Spirit - Junior School Sport
Junior Soccer
The JSSATIS soccer roster commenced this week. This year, we have the inclusion of Corpus Christi and Hilliard Christian School into the roster. Corpus Christi will play their home games at MacKillop College, which is a new venue for the Junior School, so travel time will have to be monitored. For games at Dominic, girls may be excused from class at 3:10pm and communication regarding this will be issued once we have more information regarding the MacKillop trip.
A big thank you goes to all of our coaches and managers for their support. It has been a challenge to get some training sessions in as last Friday lunch the temperature kept rising and we had to finish early and on Monday the rain came early and we couldn’t start!
A reminder that shin pads are compulsory, with boots (if grounds are not wet) and mouth guard optional.
Junior Tennis
This roster got underway on Tuesday afternoon with our Fahan team playing SVC. We have five girls in this team, so will rotate a player off each week. Many thanks to Mrs Denman for looking after this team.
Junior Orienteering
The Orienteering season is also underway. Fahan has nine girls participating, which is great, and thank you goes to Mrs Wiggins for attending the range of venues that Orienteering utilises and for helping the girls get started with their timing chips, maps etc..
Junior House Swimming
Next Wednesday will see the running of the Junior House Swimming Carnival. With a return to some normality (fingers crossed), this will be a Year 3-6 Carnival, with parent support most welcome. An Edsmart with further details and timetable will be out soon.
When: Wednesday 1 March
Where: Clarence Pool
Time: 9:45am to 2:30pm
Swim and Survive
The Swim and Survive program is now well underway. The girls seem to be enjoying themselves, if the squeals and excitement are anything to go by. A reminder that movement from group to group can occur any time over the two weeks as it is obviously the aim of the instructors to group swimmers of like ability with each other for both the benefit of the students and ease of instruction.

Library Lovers' Day - Junior School Library
On Tuesday 14 February we celebrated Library Lover’s Day enjoying a ‘Book-nic’ – a book lover’s picnic in our gardens. Australian Library and Information Association (ALIA) asks: ‘Has your library enriched your life in big or small ways? Is there something that your library does that no other public service, or space, can do? Is your world a better place because of your library?
We read titles such as 11 Words For Love, In My Heart – A Book of Feelings and Origami Heart. We talked about love and what love is. Prep student, Ava, remarked that when she thinks of love, she thinks of all of the memories of the past. Amelia, also from Prep, added that when she thinks of love it makes her want to hug her whole family.

Library Lovers' Day - Senior School Library
Library Lovers’ Day is a day dedicated to celebrating libraries and the important role they play in our schools and communities.
Students enjoy the day as it gives them the opportunity to express their love and appreciation for all the resources and support available to them. As a bonus they received a treat for doing so.
Here are some responses from the students as to why they love their library:
It's a safe and comfortable place to study or read.
I love the energy the library holds, it’s quiet and big and an easy safe space.
I love all the genres of books.
Dear Library, I adore your charm, your colourful culture and good vibes.
I love the range of classic books.
The referencing help.
Good temperature and good smells.
