On Tuesday I had the pleasure of attending the Senior SATIS Athletics Carnival in Launceston. I could not have been more proud of every one of our athletes who competed on the day. Despite some nerves when faced with a strong field of competitors, I also saw clear demonstrations of grit. This character strength is so necessary for us in life, and learning how to harness and apply it is tremendously beneficial for our futures.
Psychologist, Angela Duckworth, defines grit as a combination of passion and perseverance and sees that having grit is the key to achieving long term goals, especially in the face of challenges and setbacks. People who demonstrate grit tend to be more resilient, have higher levels of self-control and are better able to handle stress. They also tend to have a growth mindset, meaning that they see failures as opportunities to learn and improve, rather than evidence of their limitations.
Success is not just about talent or luck, but also determination and perseverance. By cultivating our own grit, we can better navigate the challenges that life throws our way and achieve our goals. Schoolwork and assignments require organisation, concentration and, of course, grit. We can certainly celebrate the achievements that have required grit and there have been many examples of this throughout the term. We had three students competing in the Australian Schools Rowing Nationals in Perth last week; Years 3, 7 and 9 students completed NAPLAN assessments; students competed in the JSATIS and House Swimming Carnivals; Years 8 and 9 students attended the Make a Difference Summit hosted by yLead; Years 7 to 10 students participated in the da Vinci Decathlon; just to name a few.
As an action-packed and joyful Term 1 draws to a close, I hope that you all have the chance for some time with your families and relax, ready for the challenges that Term 2 will bring.
A reminder that Term 2 commences on Wednesday 26 April when we change from Summer to Winter Uniform.
Happy Easter!
Best wishes
Meg Lawson

Learning in Pre-Kinder
On 10 March, the Pre-Kinders set off on the Fahan School bus all excited for the adventures to be had at the Royal Botanical Gardens.
We explored many different areas of the garden, investigating, smelling the scents and looking at the array of colours.
The children were quick to find lady bugs and the ducks, who were wondering around the gardens, coming up to people to say hello. We really think they only came close hoping for some food. Spending time at the Lily Pond, we watched the ducks weave and dive for food as they swam around.
In the harvest garden we found some delicious looking fruits and vegetables including many big, round, orange and green pumpkins and bananas. We could smell the herbs that had just been cut and harvested by one of the cooks from the Botanical Café.
Hanging from trees there were quinces, apples, pears, olives, chestnuts, chillies and capsicums.
It was a wonderful morning of learning and connection with the natural world.

Learning Gross Motor Skills
During Term 1, Prep students were invited to participate in a number of lessons developed by the Years 9/10 Sport Science students. These lessons formed part of a Children in Sport Unit and aimed to develop gross motor skills.
Prep students thoroughly enjoyed the interesting and challenging obstacle courses created by the senior students. They also relished the kindness and feedback provided to them.
Thank you Mrs Buchanan and the Years 9/10 Sport Science class!

Learning about Data in Maths
Recently in Maths, the Year 1 girls have been learning about collecting data and have looked at some of the different ways to go about gathering and grouping information. We have learnt how to use tally marks, create pictographs and make bar graphs with our findings. We especially loved gathering data about how many teeth have been lost among the members of our class and drawing conclusions about who has lost the most and least teeth so far.
We also enjoyed a data gathering session with the Year 2 class and discovered which sport is the most popular at the moment (basketball) and which animal is currently the favourite pet (dog).

Learning in the Junior Library
On Monday 27 March, Tasmanian author, Lian Tanner, visited Fahan. Students were asked to imagine that Year 4 student, Amélie, was a dragon because, unfortunately, Lian was not permitted to bring in her pet dragon, or her sword.
Amélie the dragon has blue and purple scales. She breathes fire. Amélie has very good hearing and she once heard a toilet flush from the other side of the world! She has very sharp teeth and can camouflage and transform. Amélie the dragon loves barbeque pork buns. She glows in the dark and she shimmers.
Lian emphasised the importance of providing ‘sense’ details when writing as our senses inform our perception of our world.
Lian will launch her newest book, Spellhound, at the State Library of Tasmania on Saturday 22 April at 10:30am. All are welcome!

Learning about the First Fleet
In Year 4, the students researched the First Fleet. They considered such questions as why Britain established a colony in Australia and what was life like on the First Fleet. In these activities, the girls wrote a journal entry of a convict using fountain pens.

Learning about Chemical Sciences
Last Wednesday, as part of a Chemical Science unit, Year 4 students looked at the observable properties of materials to explain how objects and materials can be used.
In this lesson, the students conducted a fair test about elasticity. They looked at how high four different types of balls bounced. One student dropped the balls from the same height and at the same speed. The other student filmed the balls being dropped to measure the bounce height.

Learning about Sustainable Games
I’m sure you are all familiar with the recycling loop, three black bent arrows forming a circle. That’s the Modius Loop, the universal symbol for recycling that first appeared in 1970 initially to raise consumer awareness of recycled paper. During 1988 similar coloured logos appeared with the numbers 1-7 in the middle. This is the plastic resin ID code and indicates the resin composition of the plastic.
During Term 1, Years 5 and 6 students have been working with Mrs Heather discussing ways that food manufacturers are changing their packaging to be more sustainable, and how we can help reduce the use of plastics at home and School.
One day Mrs Heather asked us to go through our recycling bins around the School and collect items that we thought would be suitable to make a board game. After we washed our items, and worked with our team and began designing our game. We only had a short time to make our games but fortunately, it rained during recess and lunch one day and we were able to work on them for longer.
We had lots of fun making our ‘Barbie Monopoly’ game and using our teamwork skills. Gertie, Pippa and Rosie
Our game ‘Dare’ is made from recyclable materials. Olivia, Harper and Niamh
We enjoyed making our ‘Escape’ game. Emilia, Freya and Sophia
Our game was called ‘Sugar Rush’. Deeksha, Sahaja and Emily
Our game ‘Fancy Nancy Snakes & Ladders’ was fun to make out of bits and pieces. Caroline, Charlotte B and Audrey
We had fun making our game ‘Luck’. There was so much to choose from around the School. Scarlett, Olivia and Madison
Year 4 students were our first players. Due to our games being a huge success we ran out of time to play all the games. After a discussion it was decided that we could move around the Junior School with our games when we are inside at lunchtime due to rain. What a great way to buddy up with our younger year groups.
Unfortunately, most plastics can take up to 20-500 years to decompose. Thankfully, some plastics are recyclable and made into other useful items, like our games.

Learning - Art in Action
Students across the Senior School have immersed themselves in the Visual Art program this term. All Art students from Years 7 to 12 constructed their own art journals to use throughout the year and designed covers for them with collage and paint.
Some highlights were large collaborative drawings and paintings in Years 9 and 10, and Autumn leaf paintings and observational drawing sessions in Years 7 and 8.
TCE Visual Art and Art Studio Practice students are well underway with their practical work and exploring a huge variety of media and ideas.

Learning about yLead
This week, students in Year 8 and 9 were given the opportunity to attend the Make A Difference (MAD) Summit hosted by yLead in conjunction with the Alliance of Girls Schools Australasia. The event took place at St Michael’s Collegiate on Wednesday 5 April and saw 25 Years 8 and 9 students from each member school come together to learn new skills in leadership and communication, while also meeting a myriad of new people from across our four alliance girls schools.
yLead is an independent not-for-profit organization that delivers positive education and student leadership programs to young people across Australia. Their MAD Summit is designed to help students develop their leadership skills and make a difference in the world. Our School was thrilled to be able to offer this opportunity to our students. The program offered a range of experiences designed to develop the leader within, with a focus on building communication, teamwork, and problem-solving skills.
Our students had a fantastic time at the Summit and came back energized and inspired by what they had learnt. They were given the chance to participate in a range of activities, including team-building exercises, workshops, and group discussions. The event provided a platform for students to share their ideas and experiences, and to learn from one another.
We are grateful to yLead for hosting such a wonderful event and to the Alliance of Girls Schools Australasia for making it possible. We look forward to continuing to work with these organizations in the future to provide our students with similar opportunities.

Learning about the da Vinci Decathlon
Over the last week multiple students from Years 7 to 10 took part in the da Vinci Decathlon which was held at The Hutchins School. It was an academic competition, containing ten disciplines such as code breaking, ideation, mathematics, art and poetry, each to stimulate and challenge the mind. The day was slightly chaotic, but extremely fun and a great way to extend our knowledge whilst working collaboratively as a team.
A huge thank you goes to Mr Bevan for organising the teams, as well as Dr Stewart for coming along on the day.

Learning about Surfing
The Year 10s were very excited to participate in three surfing sessions with Coast Rider over the past few weeks as part of our PE lessons. With a large group of girls in our year group, there was a vast range of abilities and the sessions, held on three consecutive Friday afternoons, were very welcoming. Everyone had no problem with jumping in and having a go, even those of us who had never surfed before.
Each week was a very different experience as we were faced with changing weather conditions, which affected how easy it was to catch waves. Over the three sessions, everyone became more confident, and although the weather conditions didn’t always match the energy and excitement, everyone still went in and had a great time.

Learning in France
Over the holidays, I was lucky enough to spend two months in the south of France, in a city called Aix-En-Provence. I’ve got to say it was one of the best experiences of my life.
Following on from my hosting experience in Term 3 last year, by November it was my turn to pack my suitcase and fly over with a group of eight other Australian students travelling to France. When you start to consider doing something like this, the first thoughts that go through your mind are, What will my host family be like? How will I go at school? and the scarier ones such as What if something goes wrong? What if I’m in over my head? However, I can honestly say that the excitement of the trip overtook those initial fears, and while it was a challenge, from hearing nothing but a different language all around you, to navigating a huge high school where you don’t know anyone, the overall experience was absolutely worth it and I thought I’d describe my experience there in hopes of inspiring other students to do the same!
The program was organised by the Australian organisation Students of the World, and the group of exchange students were chaperoned all the way from Melbourne to Dubai airport to Paris, where the eight of us stayed together the first night. We went by train to our host families’ cities or towns the next day, each host family having applied through the organisations and selecting which student to host based on similar interests and compatible lifestyles.
The first week for me was all about adjusting to the new lifestyle – language, diet, daily routine, climate and so on. School was the biggest change for me as my high school had around 2500 students across only three grades. On top of that, the timetable is structured differently to ours, there is no uniform and everyone eats lunch in the cafeteria, or goes out to the centre of town which was only a two-minute walk from the school! Needless to say, it was completely different to my own schooling, which I loved as it allowed me to experience school as millions of French students do – an experience I could only gain a proper understanding of from doing it myself.
Other experiences I had were walking through old chateaus and ruins of castles, visiting museums, going out to lots of restaurants and cafes, and probably the highlight of my trip – seeing the world-famous Marche de Noël (Christmas market) in Strasbourg, Alsace. Over the three nights there we walked through the narrow streets of the city, warmly lit market stalls filling the streets, coloured lights strung up overhead, fluffy snow coating every surface and the smell of Christmas cake and rum around every corner. I kept thinking how it felt like something out of a movie!
Overall, the experience was truly unforgettable and something that will stay with me for the rest of my life. I learnt so much, made friends in another country, and experienced a once in a lifetime opportunity.

Spirit of Easter
On Wednesday morning families of students from Kindergarten to Year 2 celebrated the end of Term 1 with an Easter Breakfast. Students enjoyed fresh fruit and hot cross buns and parents treated themselves to tea and coffee supplied by Towbar Coffee. Kindergarten students wore colourful Easter bonnets and enjoyed playing with their Prep – Year 2 buddies. It was a delightful way to celebrate the end of a wonderful term.

Spirit of Outdoor Education in Year 3
What a fabulous time Year 3 students had on their first Outdoor Education experience for the year at the Waterworks Reserve this week!
Mr Firth took us on a fabulous bushwalk, explaining the history of the Waterworks Reserve along the way. We also had an opportunity to find and identify different types of animal scats, using poo flip charts. Ranger Rob, from Hobart City Council Bush Adventures, showed us how to collect and identify water bugs. We discovered that the water there is very clean! Thank you to Mr. Firth, Mrs. McMahon, Daisy Maning, and Ranger Rob for a great experience!

Spirit of Outdoor Education in the Senior School
Over the past few weeks, Years 9/10 Outdoor Education Skills classes and the Years 11/12 Outdoor Education class have continued to develop their skills in various water-based activities. The students have been working on their skills in coasteering, stand-up paddleboarding and surfing. All these activities are aimed at increasing their skill set for a range of water-based activities in their local area and giving them the confidence to pursue these interests in their own time.

Spirit of Year 12 - Save the Date!
![](https://fahanschool.schoolzineplus.com/_file/media/9539/quiz_night_save_the_date.jpg)
Thank you to all the families who supported our Banjo's Easter Bun Fundraiser this week.
Our major fundraising initiative this year will be a Quiz Night on Saturday 27 May.
This will help towards our goal to raise over $20,000 this year for our two Tasmanian charities, The Variety Freya Fund and S.H.E. The Variety Freya Fund was established to support families with severely ill or disabled children and S.H.E. is a gynaecological cancer group providing Support, Hope and Education to all Tasmanians.
Look out for the invitation that will follow in the first week of Term 2!
Harriet Badenach (Head Girl), Charlotte Jones and Grace Hooper (Deputy Head Girls) on behalf of Year 12.

JSSATIS Swimming
Last Monday saw the running of the JSSATIS Swimming Carnival. This year, the competition was very strong, with the Fahan girls finishing the meet with some excellent results. A big thank you goes to Mrs Steel for assisting with this team.

Junior Netball
This season gets underway in Term 2. Presently, we have 58 players signed up for this roster, which is amazing. We have three teams entered in both the Years 3/4 roster and the Years 5/6 roster. It would be fantastic to have one or two more players for the Years 3/4 teams, which currently stand at eight, eight and nine players. If there are any Years 3/4 students who were considering playing, your services would be warmly received!
Thank you to those parents/students that have volunteered to help out with coaching/managing.
I will touch base at a later date with further information.
Junior Hockey
This season also gets underway in Term 2. Fahan will enter four teams in this roster. At present we have entered two Years 1/2 teams but both of these could do with one or two more players. So, if there are any Years 1/2 students who were considering playing hockey, it would be great if you were able to play (a hockey stick and shin pads could be borrowed if needed).
Thank you to those parents/students that have volunteered to help out with coaching/managing.
I will touch base at a later date with further information.
Junior Soccer
This roster came to a conclusion on Thursday. With my team having it’s game cancelled last week, I was able to watch the other games that were held at Fahan. It was pleasing to see how immersed the girls were in the games, being part of a team and executing the skills of the game. Of course, scoring goals was pretty high on that list too!
A big thank you goes to our many coaches; Mark Playle, Luke Taylor, Ruby Bartulovic, Kevin Stannard, Sam Boyes, Matt Pilkington, Zara Marino, Mary Marino, Mel Hinkley, Mrs Bury and Mr Hodgman, as well as team managers and supporters who have all contributed to making Thursday afternoons a very enjoyable time of the week.
Junior Orienteering and Junior Tennis
These rosters concluded recently and I would like to thank Mrs Wiggins and Mrs Denman for looking after these sports.

Spirit - Senior School Sport
Term 1 has been an eventful one for Senior Sport. Throughout the term, many students represented Fahan in a variety of sports and I have been immensely proud of the way Fahan athletes behaved on the field, the court and the track. We have had outstanding results and our students continually compete and represent our School with spirit, pride, determination, and excellent sportsmanship. We are competitive and never give up!
Soccer
Congratulations to the Years 7/8 Orange Soccer team who played in the SSATIS Grand Final on Wednesday 5 April against The Friends’ School. Fahan was victorious and won the Shield. The score was 0 – 0 with Fahan winning as we were the team who finished on top if the ladder.
Thank you to Year 11 students Evy Papastamatis and Coco Butler for coaching and Mrs Buchanan for being the team manager.
Hobart Marathon
On Sunday 2 April, a team of nine Fahan staff and one student ran in the Hobart Marathon. There was also a huge team of Fahan volunteers on the course and at the finish line. These volunteers included students, staff and parents, and to see them on the course and at the finish line was extremely motivating.
Congratulations to everyone who ran and volunteered and thank you for making the effort to be involved. To have a team of Fahan staff, students and parents at the event was exciting. There were many personal best times and to see everyone’s smiles as they crossed the finish line was heart-warming and was a real demonstration of how fulfilling it can be to achieve a goal.
City to Casino Fun Run
The City to Casino Fun Run is on Sunday 21 May. After the excitement of the Hobart Marathon, we have a Fahan team! There is a 12k run, 7k run and 7k walk as well as a 2.7k run. This year is the 50th City to Casino and it will be a great event to be part of. If you would like to join, go to the City to Casino website and join the Fahan School team. If you need more details, please email me.
Sailing
Congratulations to the Sailing team who competed on Saturday 1 and Sunday 2 April in the Schools Teams Racing Championships at SBSC. The Fahan Navy team were 5th overall and 2nd Girls team and the Fahan Orange team finished 11th.
Thank you to Amy Potter and Mr Wood who have coached and managed the team. The sailors have been training all term in a variety of weather conditions and their dedication to Fahan sailing is to be commended.
Tennis
Best wishes to the 2nd Grade Orange Tennis team who play in the SSATIS Grand Final against The Friends’ School Blue at the Domain Tennis Centre at 4:15pm today. We look forward to hearing the results.
Rowing National Championships
Congratulations to Molly Crosby, Annabelle Fry and Matilda Cocker who competed at the Australian Rowing Championships in Perth last week. All three girls rowed well with Molly and Annabelle racing in the U19 Women’s Coxless Pair, finishing 10th in Australia. Matilda rowed in multiple events including U17 Women’s Single Scull, Double Scull and Coxed Quadruple Scull, reaching the semi-finals in two of her events.
SATIS Athletics
Congratulations to everyone who represented Fahan in the SATIS Athletics at the St Leonard’s Athletics Centre in Launceston on Tuesday 4 April.
Team members had a very early start and travelled to Launceston with the first race beginning at 9:00am. Thank you to Mrs Williamson and Daisy Maning for travelling with the team on the bus.
A huge thank you goes to all team members for their commitment. There were many athletes competing in many events throughout the day and there were athletes who stepped in at the last minute.
Thank you to Rob Mazey and Cameron Mann who coached the team in the early mornings and after School. Their expertise, kindness and hard work were very much appreciated.
Fahan had excellent results and again I feel a huge sense of pride when I see our Fahan athletes. The spirit in which we compete and the pride our athletes have in representing their School is outstanding.

Community - Spreading Kindness
Year 6 students visited Sandown Retirement Village to deliver some Easter cards they had made for the residents.
We started making the Easter cards 3 weeks ago when we had lunch and recess inside. Some people were really creative with their designs.
I hope that our cards will make some people happy during the Easter period. Chloe East

Community - QVMAG Arts Foundation Medallion
Congratulations to Anabelle Zeeman (Year 12) who is the recipient of the 2022 QVMAG Arts Foundation medallion for her work titled, Untitled (2022).
In 2020 the QVMAG Arts Foundation developed a new award to acknowledge emerging student artists who significantly contribute to the fine arts in Tasmania.
Each year, one student is chosen by the exhibition curator of ArtRage to be awarded a medallion, featuring a limited-edition artwork, donated by Tasmanian artist Michael McWilliams.
The aim of my artwork was to capture the light and beauty of the natural landscape. Receiving this medallion makes me feel honoured that my art has been recognised by such well-known and respected artists.
ArtRage curator, Patrick Sutczak, said it was a brilliant opportunity to be guest curator of the 2022 exhibition.
It was a great experience to discover and collect works from student artists state-wide in the development of ArtRage.
To award Anabelle with the 2022 QVMAG Arts Foundation award is fantastic; Untitled (2022) is an outstanding work featured this year.
I hope that the awarding of this medallion encourages Anabelle to continue developing her great talent.
Congratulations, Anabelle!

Community - Every Brilliant Thing directed by Christine Best
Fahan's Drama Teacher, Christine Best, is directing the play, Every Brilliant Thing, at the Theatre Royal from 4-6 May.
Faced with her mum’s depression a young girl compiles a list of every brilliant thing that makes life worth living.
Twenty years on, what started as a simple act of love to get mum through each day has transformed the way she sees the world. In what promises to be the most intimate theatrical experience of the year, Every Brilliant Thing takes us through the shadows of mental illness to find joy in the miracles of life’s minutiae.
Community - Academic and Principal's Scholarships
