Principal's Report

Last week many of us attended the funeral to farewell and remember teacher, colleague and friend, Mr Benedict Mackey. For a number of years, Ben graced us with his musical talents and his passion for music was evident in all that he did.
As an outstanding pianist and a Fellow of the Royal College of Organists, one of only eleven in the world, Ben was a true inspiration to all of his students. His dedication and commitment to music education were evident in his teaching.
Ben was not only a gifted musician but also a gentle, kind and caring individual. The loss of Ben will be deeply felt by our entire community, and I would like to take this opportunity to thank all of you for your support of both staff and students during this difficult time.
This week, students from Years 3-12 joined together to remember Ben by planting a tree outside of the Music School and shared some time together. Our younger students made a beautiful flower display of musical notes.
We will honour Ben’s memory by continuing to foster a love of music in our students and upholding the values of kindness, dedication to learning and service to the community that he embodied.
Best wishes
Meg Lawson

Learning about the King's Coronation
Last week our Kindergarten and Prep students held a Coronation High Tea in the Kindergarten playground. It was beyond delightful and the many plates of sweet treats were much appreciated. We had baskets filled with apples from Josie's orchard as well as meringues, berries, biscuits, cupcakes and so much more. Mrs Denman even made the Coronation Quiche.
It truly was a beautiful High Tea fit for a King and Queen!

Learning about Maths in Years 1 and 2
On Fridays, the Years 1 and 2 classes have been gathering together regularly for some special Maths sessions. This opportunity allows for a wide range of activities and have included some guest teachers and special helpers. This week, the girls were working on skip counting and were involved in a variety of challenging tasks that were created to stretch their thinking. Mystery numbers, skip counting hopscotch and ‘buzz’ were among our activities and the girls worked both as individuals and in teams to extend their ideas. Mrs Gath even challenged the classes to skip count in 7s and showed them a clever way to get started, which worked a treat!

Learning about Science in Year 3
Year 3 students have been busy learning about 'Heat' in Science. We have enjoyed conducting lots of experiments and learning about different heat sources. In one experiment, we added food colouring to hot water and to cold water. We noticed that the food dye in the hot water spread and mixed in a lot more quickly than in the cold water. We learnt that the molecules of hot substances move faster than the molecules of cooler substances. In another experiment, we rubbed chocolate together in our hands until it melted. (We may have eaten some too!) We learnt that the chocolate melted because the heat from our hands raises the temperature of the chocolate and causes it to melt. We popped corn kernels using a popcorn machine to make popcorn. Science is FUN!

Learning about Debating in the Junior School
Debating is an essential life skill that helps children develop confidence, learn to think on their feet and argue their point of view. It also teaches them to research, structure an argument and articulate their thoughts clearly. Debaters learn how to manage their nerves, how to present themselves in a public forum and most importantly how to take risks.
Just imagine never having debated before and having the courage to not only join the debating team but actually participate in your first debate. On Wednesday this week, eleven students participated in the first round of the Junior School debating season.
Debate topics are released a fortnight before the debate, providing the students with time to research and prepare material. Debating is a team sport, with all debating team members involved in the initial brainstorming of ideas for the Affirmative argument as well as the Negative arguments. This initial session supports every member of the team and also enables the students to consider both points of view, prior to developing their team’s arguments. Once selected in a team, students begin developing their arguments and working on their persuasive techniques. Experienced Year 6 debaters work side by side with beginning debaters to develop convincing arguments and to share important debating tips.
Whilst our Junior School debaters are at the beginning of their season, on Wednesday, they presented themselves as determined, confident and respectful speakers. They embodied the spirit of Fahan and were wonderful representatives of our School.
Round One results– (Topic - That Summer is the best season)

Learning about Reading
TM Library Readers’ Survey
We recently surveyed reading habits in the Junior School, Years 3 – 6. This survey will help us find more great books for our younger students. Here is a snapshot of the results.
- More than half of our students reported that they love reading!
- 42% of students reported that they were very confident readers.
- 56% of students said they read daily – without being asked.
- 73% of students reported that they prefer reading in bed.
- Most students in Years 3 and 4 reported that they would first turn to a parent for reading recommendations. Students in Years 5 and 6 said they would ask a friend.
- Most students reported that barriers to reading included lack of time, hobbies and after-school activities.
- The most popular genres are mystery and adventure.
- Years 3 – 6 students are interested in reading about cooking books, books about famous people and places, nature, arts and crafts and the Guinness World Records book.
We aim to foster reading for pleasure and to develop life-long reading habits. Chatting about books, reading recommendations, and reading the same books your daughter is reading are powerful ways to encourage readers of all ages.

Learning about Science in the Senior School
Last week 10N visited the Grote Reber Museum and radio telescope, and this week both Year 7 classes visited the Marine Discovery Centre.
10N have been studying the origins of the Universe and the Year 7s are studying biological classification. These trips enabled the students to apply their knowledge from class in a fun and hands-on way, and to extend their thinking by hearing from experts in these fields. Below are some comments from the students on their experiences.
We enjoyed the animals in the touch pools, especially the hermit crabs and the sea urchins. We also really liked going on the boat and sifting through the mud to find different animals. It was really fun learning about the different levels of classification, and hearing about what makes an animal fall into different categories. Year 7 Franklin
I really enjoyed when we saw a seal and when we got to try and find animals from all the mud and put them in their right container. Felicity (Year 7)
My favourite activity was using the microscopes and handing sea creatures. We learnt about abiotic factors and biotics factors of the sea, about food chains and the levels of classification. Essie
We got to look to look under a microscope and pick up hermit crabs. I really enjoyed going on the front of the boat and looking at the pufferfish. Ruby S (Year 7)
Some of the fun activities we did were looking into the microscopes to see plankton, seeing if native or introduced sea stars would flip over faster, we picked up sea stars, sea anemones and more, then we went on a boat and saw a seal. We measured the sea temperature, depth, salinity and how far down the light travelled. Alex (Year 7)
The Year 10 excursion to the Grote Reber Museum and Radio Telescope last week was an interesting experience. We learnt a lot about the background of Grote Reber and the Radio Telescope during a museum tour, where we could apply our knowledge from the prior universe unit. Additionally, we had the opportunity to witness the movement of the telescope, whilst also being able to explore the control room. To finish off, we were lucky enough to watch short 3D films to consolidate our understanding of the universe. Thank you to Ms Jacobs and Dr Stewart for this amazing opportunity, our whole class benefited from the experience. Zara Marino and Felicity Barling (Year 10)
We all thoroughly enjoyed our excursion to the Grote Reber Museum and Radio Telescope. It was a great opportunity to extend our knowledge beyond the classroom in a practical environment where our PhD tour guide, Earl, was extremely insightful and well-researched on the topics. It was amazing to see the radio telescope in motion and even look at all of the technology in the control room. The 3-dimensional movies at the end changed our perspective on the universe and enabled us to critically think about what happens beyond our planet. Year 10 Freycinet
The Mount Pleasant Radio Astronomy Observatory & Grote Reber Museum excursion was truly insightful and engaging. Before the excursion, many of us knew little to nothing about Grote Reber or radio astronomy. However, most of us came back feeling much more versed in not only radio astronomy but all forms of astronomy. Overall, the excursion was an incredibly enjoyable opportunity to extend our knowledge outside the classroom in a way that is practical and hands-on. Imogen Mulder (Year 10)

Spirit of Year 8 Outdoor Education Camp
Last week, Year 8 took part in the annual Outdoor Education camp, to the Mt Field area. The students were based at National Park. Each day they took part in a rotation of activities. This included rafting the Derwent River, hiking at Mt Field and mountain biking at Maydena Mountain Bike Park. The activities were aimed to push the students beyond their comfort zones and provide various challenge-by-choice situations. It was great to see all the students embrace these challenges and, for many, to face their fears and give these activities a go. The students should be extremely proud of their achievements and move forward from this experience, realising their capabilities. This camp was also a great chance for the cohort to bond with evening activities and free time, where they could recap their adventures with the other groups and develop new connections.
Fahan Outdoor Education camps provide an opportunity to connect with the natural wonderland that we have on our doorstep and appreciate it for all its beauty. These programs are designed to enhance wellbeing through guided reflection on involvement in group and individual activities that are challenging and adventurous. They also help to develop essential personal and social capabilities such as communication, resilience, self-confidence, leadership, teamwork, goal setting, personal autonomy and initiative.
I would like to commend the students on their achievements throughout the week and the staff and guides who helped make these camps a memorable experience for the students.

Spirit of All Schools Mountain Biking Championship
Last Friday, 23 Fahan students from Years 7-12 competed in the All Schools State Mountain Biking Championships at Trevallyn Recreation Area in Launceston. The students raced in tough conditions, with cold weather, rain and muddy trails. All the girls had a great attitude, and ended up with some fantastic results. Fahan won the U15 and U19 shields in the female events, securing second place in the U17 shield, and placing second overall amongst all participating schools!
The individual performances in the female age-based categories were also impressive. Ruby Leditschke won the U15 event and Abbey Willcox placed second and Keala Hayes third in the U19 event. Congratulations to all the participants for making it a thrilling event!

Spirit - Junior School Sport
Junior Netball
The Netball season got underway this week with our Years 3/4 and 5/6 teams playing their first games. Fahan has seven teams entered in the Years 3-6 rosters, with a total of 62 students involved, which has to be a record number of players for Fahan in Junior School Netball.
Junior Hockey
The Hockey season got underway last Saturday at Cornelian Bay. Fahan has entered four teams in this roster, with excellent numbers in our Open Primary team, but we are tight for numbers in our Years 1/2 teams. I have had those games scheduled back to back, so any girls who wish to play a second game and help the other team out, please let coaches/managers know of their availability. As I mentioned before Term 1 ended, we are still looking for players for these two teams and will try and maintain the two teams, with a preference for the girls to play more rather than less, but if it isn’t working and we start to play short every week, we can make the move to withdraw a team and join forces.
Junior School Cross Country
The girls have commenced work on their Fitness Unit in PE. Please see below a list of dates which can encapsulate a Cross Country Season.

Cross Country
The Senior School Cross Country was held on Wednesday 10 May at Sandown Oval and Nutgrove Beach.
All students from Years 7 – 12 competed a 2.8km race around the Sandown Ovals and on Nutgrove Beach. Freycinet, Franklin and Fenton did their best cheering which certainly encouraged their team mates to give their best efforts.
Congratulations to Freycinet for being the winning House.

Community - Invitation to Join the Fahan School Reconciliation Action Plan Working Group
At Fahan, we are committed to fostering a culture of learning, spirit, and community that is inclusive and respectful of all people. One of the ways in which we can continue to work towards this goal is by developing a Reconciliation Action Plan (RAP) that will guide us in our efforts to promote reconciliation with Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples. We believe that developing a RAP is essential to creating an environment that is truly inclusive and welcoming to all. We are committed to creating a RAP that is meaningful, effective, and reflects the values and aspirations of our School Community.
A RAP is a strategic plan outlining actions and targets that an organisation can undertake to help close the gap between Indigenous and non-Indigenous Australians. It provides a framework for improving relationships, creating meaningful opportunities, and promoting a greater understanding and respect for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander cultures.
We would be keen to hear from members of our parent community who would be interested in joining our Reconciliation Action Plan Working Group. This Group will be responsible for guiding the development and implementation of our RAP, and will work closely with staff, students, and the wider community to ensure that our efforts are aligned with our values and goals.
If you are interested in joining the Working Group, please let me know via email and I will provide you with more information about the Working Group and its role.
Thank you for your ongoing support and commitment to our School Community.
Mrs Tania Gath

Community - Autumn Vacation Care
Our vacation program at Fahan continues to reflect our philosophy of learning and enquiry.
Our vacation care program is designed to promote and extend on our children’s learning and interests, and we continue to refine and reflect on the experiences we offer.
We enjoyed a very busy two-week program and offered a range of different experiences to support enquiry-based learning. Many of our Pre-Kinders siblings joined them for this program.
A range of experiences were on offer, including a walk to the local beach area to explore the history of the settlement and to enjoy some rock climbing along the foreshore.
Vivienne ran a day where she shared her heritage and culture with the children, and they all learnt about Chinese food and eating out in China.
A soup making day extended the children with a lovely folk story about sharing and supporting each other through difficult times.
ANZAC history and traditions were shared along with the baking of biscuits and learning about how they originated.
A group of older children enjoyed a bus trip to Hastings Caves where they had a tour of the caves and learnt about stalagmites and went for a swim and had a BBQ.
We continue to be true to our values, regarding reduce, reuse and recycling during our vacation program.
Kind regards
Lisa, Kelly, Moya and Vivienne
