On Wednesday we held our first Giving Day and I want to express my deepest gratitude to each and every one of you who came forward to donate towards the realisation of our Capital Master Plan. The day was a resounding success, raising $155 566, which is 155% of our original goal, which we are thrilled by!
Your generosity has set the wheels in motion for the first stage of the Plan, which is the renovation of the changerooms, the transformation of the Barn, and the redevelopment of the Senior Boarding Residence into classrooms on the lower level and dedicated rooms for Academic Support and Counselling on the upper level. Work on these projects will begin in the next few months.
Our Senior students are currently in the midst of SWOTVAC and are preparing diligently for their final examinations which begin next week. This is a time where the support of families is crucial. Providing a comfortable, quiet, study space free from distractions; offering emotional support, often reminding them of their capabilities; avoiding unnecessary stress or pressure and maintaining a positive atmosphere at home; assisting with time management and ensuring they are taking study breaks whilst still sticking to a schedule; providing healthy and nutritious meals and snacks; encouraging regular exercise and plenty of sleep and, finally, providing some balance and perspective. Sometimes students need reminding that whilst exams are important, they are not the sole measure of their worth or future success.
Last night the opening of the TCE Art Exhibition was nothing short of a spectacular showcase of our students’ exceptional talent and unwavering dedication. The event was a joyous occasion and walking through the exhibition space, one could not help but be inspired by the sheer diversity of artistic expression and clear evidence of the countless hours of hard work and creativity put in by each student. The exhibition will be open for you to look at until 10November. Please remember to sign in at Reception before entering the exhibition.
Please accept my heartfelt gratitude again for your contributions towards Giving Day, and we wish all our students all the very best for their TCE Examinations next week. I know both their families and teachers will be providing all the support they can.
Best wishes
Meg Lawson
Student Absence
You are reminded that if foreseen absences are unavoidable, such as holidays during term time, a Request for Absence form should be completed and returned to the School.
Notification of student absence as a result of illness should be emailed to absence@fahan.tas.edu.au, advised by telephone on 6225 1064 or submitted through the Fahan App.
Uniform Shop
The Uniform Shop will be closed from 5 December for stocktaking.
Appointments for Back to School purchases can be made during the last week of the January holidays through this link.
Learning in Vacation Care
The October vacation program has been based on our philosophy around viable sustainability, stimulating and fun, learning, wellbeing and creativity.
A number of older siblings and children joined our program and encouraged friendships and extended community networking for a period of two weeks of entertaining events.
A comprehensive range of excursions were offered including a visit to Bellerive Bluff where the children were treated to a glimpse of our colonial past, the ruins of the 1880 fort being part of a costal defence system. Getting caught in the rain and exploring the small caves at the end of the beach added to the sense of excitement and adventure! This outing was followed by a picnic at Wentworth Park.
A visit to long beach Sandy Bay with its volcanic stones which date back twenty-six million years and are visible along the banks peaked the children’s enquiry and understanding of the concept of time.
Morning tea on the beach overlooking the Derwent River supported our understanding of our extended local community.
An adventure to Snug Falls allowed the children to experience the wonder of an extended bush walk, exploring caves and uprooted trees along the way.
The Falls were flowing, and the children explored the greater area hopping from rock to rock as they tested themselves with some risky play experiences. Followed by a picnic lunch at Snug Beach.
Repurposed materials were utilised in the construction of sculptures and canvas prints where imaginations, originality and design served as testament to our children future developing abilities. Gardening was another fun, healthy and sustainable activity offering the children the opportunity to learn planning and mulching skills including the science around growing food. Our afternoon tea which the children helped to prepare for making biscuits and sandwiched was well attended by parents and grandparents was a wonderful extension of our community connections and relationships with families.
We continue to offer experiences that are relevant to todays world and develop the whole child: Physical, social, emotional, and cognitive including skills for life.

Learning about Bookshops
On Wednesday 25 October, Kindergarten students visited Fullers Bookshop.
We were delighted to meet children’s bookseller, Sophie, who read us two picture books and talked to us about bookshops.
We were very excited to learn that, as part of their commitment to literacy, Fullers Bookshop will, over the next five years, give away up to $100,000 worth of books to help improve literacy in Tasmania. The primary recipients of these books will be children and young people in schools.
Every Kindergarten student chose one book to keep! Afterwards, we all enjoyed a hot chocolate in the Bookshop Café.

Learning on Excursions in Kindergarten
On 31 October, Kindergarten students travelled to the Kettering Marina. There, we met boat builder, Andrew Denman, and stepped aboard the 100 year-old boat, Te Rapunga. Te Rapunga has a long history with Tasmania, having won the second Trans-Tasman race and the first Melbourne to Hobart race. Te Rapunga was restored to its original condition over a two-year period. The students were amazed that this boat, which looked like new, was indeed built in 1923!
Our next stop was Earthenry Flower Farm. Kindergarten students have spent many hours learning about flowers and were eagerly anticipating our visit. We were met by Emma and her team of gardeners who grow the most exquisite flowers. After touring the farm, students were invited to pick, study and sketch the flowers. Afterwards we looked at the seed and tuber nurseries.
We then travelled to Snug Beach where we enjoyed a picnic lunch and the playground.
This excursion was a wonderful way to learn more about people and places in our community and continue our ongoing study of flowers and the number 100!

Learning in Nature in Prep
Water Bugs Galore!
The best place to learn about nature is in nature, however, when the weather doesn’t co-operate, planned excursions in the bush can become rich and fulfilling incursions in the classroom.
Equipped with buckets full of water samples from the foothills of kunanyi, pipettes, microscopes and a good dose of curiosity, Prep students recently participated in a science inquiry lesson into the life of water gugs. The experience and results were amazing!
Thank you Rob from the Bush Adventures Program at Hobart City Council. Your enthusiasm for all things water bugs was truly inspiring.

Learning about Surf Lifesaving in Years 1 and 2
The Year 1 and 2 classes were recently able to enjoy a visit from Surf Lifesaving Tasmania (SLST). During our session together, the students discussed important aspects of water safety and asked lots of questions about how to be safe at the beach and around the pool. The SLST team were very knowledgeable and lots of fun, which made learning easy and enjoyable.
Unfortunately, the weather conditions didn’t allow us to participate in the practical element of the day, which was to be held at Long Beach. Thankfully, an alternate date has been secured and we are all very excited to put our knowledge into action soon.

Learning about Maths in Year 3
In Year 3 we have been enjoying playing a variety of maths games to consolidate concepts and help build strategic thinking and problem-solving skills. We have been playing games to build our skills and understanding of:
- multiplication and division facts
- addition and subtraction strategies
- place value
- telling the time
- money
Playing games with our friends is such a fun way to learn!

Learning Bush Skills in Year 4
On Wednesday 1 November, Year 4 students went on an excursion to Waterworks. We did activities such as pitching a tent and orienteering.
We got split into two groups, with one group doing orienteering with Jayde and Mrs Bakonyi, and the other group pitching tents with Mr Firth. After each group finished, we had our delicious lunch! Then we switched over to the opposite activity.
We saw an adorable pademelon and three kookaburras. We feel more ready, skilled and confident for Year 5 camp next year.

Learning about Port Arthur in Year 5
Last Tuesday, 24 October, we went on our Year 5 overnight excursion to Port Arthur where we learnt about the early settlement of Van Diemen’s land and convict history.
We started off with a tour with a guide where we discovered what life was like as a male convict. We learnt that Port Arthur was founded in 1830 and if you tried to escape you would probably fail because of the natural hazards of the bush and the water. If you did manage to escape you would end up at Eaglehawk Neck where there would be guard dogs stopping you from leaving the peninsula.
We stayed in cabins at the Port Arthur Holiday Park. After a lovely BBQ dinner, we created and shared amazing skits relating to convict adventures.
On Wednesday we went back to the Port Arthur site in the wind and rain. It was miserable weather but, unlike the convicts, we had our waterproof coats. Our cruise to the Isle of the Dead was cancelled due to the weather so we participated in a Convict Escape tour.
The bus trip home was very quiet as many of us were asleep.
Thank you to Mr Firth, Jayde, Mrs Dalton and Mrs Wright for organising the trip.

Learning through Science Investigation Projects in Year 6
These past few weeks all Year 6 students have been working hard on their science investigation projects. Everyone was given the option to work by themselves or with a partner, and then decided what we were going to investigate. Some of the 32 investigations were Hydroponics, Sugar Rush, Keeping Food Fresh and The Chip Challenge. All investigations were very interesting to learn about. After we completed our investigation, everyone had to be judged to discuss their understanding of what was investigated.
Our judges were members with diverse backgrounds: Mr Nick Drysdale (Grounds and Facilities Officer and Horticulturist), Mrs Kathy Foster (former Deputy Principal of Fahan and Science/Maths teacher), Dr Niall Stewart (Lab Technician and Scientist), Madame Palmer (French teacher), Dr Kate Greaves (Educational Assistant and Marine Biologist), Sue Cole (Educational Assistant and Digital Technology), Mr Nic Goodwolf (Art Teacher), Mrs Maria Conway (School Counsellor), Mrs Tania Gath (Head of Junior School), Mrs Sarah Parsons (Year 1 Teacher) and Miss Felicity Jacobs (Senior Science Co-ordinator and Teacher).
We are all waiting in anticipation for the final judging awards to be announced.
We would like to thank all the wonderful scientific judges who took part in our investigation.

Learning about the Marine Discovery Centre in Year 8
On 18 and 19 October, the Year 8 cohort went to the Marine Discovery Centre in Woodbridge. Once we got there, Chloe, one of the teachers who works there, gave us a presentation on the different classification groups of sea creatures and their features. We were given a short recess break then split into two groups. One group experienced a short boat outing, while the other group rotated through stations set up in the laboratory.
On the boat, we were exposed to a range of activities. In pairs, we contributed to a class table including the statistics of the sea. This involved measuring the temperature, salinity, oxygen, and other abiotic data. After allowing us to spend some time appreciating the beautiful weather and view (including a sighting of a seal), Chloe and the boat captain dragged a cage through the seafloor to capture mud. We then emptied the contents onto a table and sorted through the organisms that we could find in each phylum. A few of us found hermit crabs, sea squirts, worms, and much more!
In the lab, we were each given an activity booklet and got to individually rotate around the tasks. The tasks were drawing a sea creature of our choice from the observation tank, flipping over both a native and introduced sea star and seeing which one turned back over the fastest, looking at plankton under a microscope, making a food web and creating a Venn diagram of seahorses and sharks.
After a short lunch break, we switched groups to ensure each of us were able to complete all the tasks. We were then allowed free time to explore and feel the animals in the Marine Discovery Centre, including sea stars, sharks, sea anemones, skates and hermit crabs. Following that, we were given the opportunity to feed the animals, such as the ones we touched earlier, other species of fish, and even a pufferfish!

Here are some comments from the Year 8 students:
I really enjoyed how to calculate the amount of oxygen, the amount of sun and how clear the water was. I learnt a lot about the marine life and where they came from, how they survived. Emily Zhang
I thoroughly enjoyed the session inside the lab where we were able to find information about the animals. My personal favourite part in the whole excursion was definitely meeting all of the animals in the tanks and feeding the fish. Mia Ciscon
At the Marine Discovery Centre, I enjoyed going on the boat and going through all the mud with all the animals and sorting them in different containers. Zoe Mansfield
I really enjoyed learning about the different types of animals and what phylum and family they come from. I also enjoyed the boat trip and learning what they would do out there and how they would measure each thing. Scarlett Goldspink
It was exciting when we saw a seal swimming beside the boat when we were walking around. I found it interesting when Chloe was giving the talk about classification, it was really cool to see all the scientific names and the different groups that the animals were classified into. Ruby Leditschke

Learning through Revision
![](https://fahanschool.schoolzineplus.com/_file/media/12755/learning_through_revision.jpg)
It is that time of year for Years 11 and 12 students. Preparing for the end of year examinations is a task which requires diligence and commitment. Once the retake tests are completed and the final internal grades issued, it is time for students to organise themselves for the weeks ahead.
There are many good outcomes from thorough revision: a deeper understanding of the concepts learnt, an opportunity to make connections between the various areas of study and the prospect to reach mastery.
As part of the revision tasks, students make tick lists, flash cards, practise using past tests and past examination papers, and read the assessment reports written by the examiners (available on the TASC website along with the answers to past examination papers).
A little advice to Year 10 students is to make sure you prepare as best as you can for your end of year exams. It will boost your confidence for next year!

Spirit of My Place Competition
The Australian Children’s Television Foundation has offered a student writing competition based on the themes in ‘My Place’ since 2018. This creative writing competition is open to primary students in Years 1 to 6, secondary students in Years 7 and 8, and special education students of all ages. The 2023 Competition theme was ‘Play and Imagination’. Entrants were asked to explore how children throughout history have used their imaginations to play, and what their play might tell us about life in the past, present and future.
Last week we learnt that two of our Year 7 students, Taylah East and Essie Burke, were selected as prize winners in the 2023 competition. The following was written in an email from the ACTF National Curriculum Manager, notifying us of the girls’ achievements:
Taylah East’s entry titled ‘Taylah’s Toys’ has won equal 1st place in the Special Education category. Our judges loved seeing the integrated learning which informed Taylah’s writing, and this entry met the competition theme well by showing how play changes over time.
Essie’s entry titled ‘Play Place’ has won 1st place in our Year 7 and 8 category. Our judges loved the fantastic vocabulary in the piece and the way that Essie crafted a dark mood throughout with touches of humour. We were unsure when this story was set but felt that this worked to build interest and intrigue for readers.
Taylah and Essie will receive a copy of ‘My Place’ signed by author Nadia Wheatley, a book pack complements of Walker Books, and a certificate of achievement. The winners will be formally announced in the Australian Children’s Television newsletter on Tuesday 7 November and their work will be published on their website. Congratulations, Taylah and Essie!

Spirit of Year 7 Reading with Year 1
On Tuesday 24 of October, 7O went up to the Junior School to read their very own picture books to the Year 1 students. The Year 7s had been exploring picture books, looking at illustrations and literary devices. Using these skills and their own creativity, they created their very own picture books suited to read out loud to the younger students.
When it came to sharing their stories, a couple of Year 7s paired up with a Year 1 student to read aloud their books to them. The Year 1s had a feedback sheet where they could choose ‘two stars and a wish’, where they wrote down two things they liked about the book and one thing they wished could have been better or improved.
Overall, everyone had a wonderful time either reading or listening to some amazing and meaningful picture books, and the Year 7s can’t wait to go back to the Junior School to spend more time with the younger students.

Spirit of Years 9/10 Play
Years 9/10 Drama classes performed Shakes a Tale, a play loosely based on Shakespeare’s King Lear. This play incorporated fast changes, princess wigs and stage combat. The students took up the challenge and quickly learnt the techniques of stage fighting, which they obviously enjoyed. The comedy was a great success and the rehearsal process generated much laughter.
The following theatre professionals worked alongside the students:
Rosemary Cann (Stage Manager)
Andrew Casey (Fight Coach)
Brendon Veronese (Production Manager)
Benjamin Nelan (Digital sets and filming)
Thank you to the amazing backstage crew of Matilda Cocker and Georgina Parnham, who helped with wigs and fast costume changes, and Molly Porter as Tech Crew.

Spirit of Halloween Bake Sale
On Tuesday 31 October, Year 9 held a Halloween-themed bake sale for the Junior and Senior School. This was part of our Lumina 9 fundraiser for Bikes 4 Kids.
Everyone made Halloween-themed sweet treats which we sold at recess and lunch times. The bake sale went super well, and we have raised lots of money to put towards buying bikes for children in need.
Thank you to everyone in Year 9 who contributed by baking, organising, setting up, packing up and serving, and a massive thank you to our teachers, maintenance staff, and Ms Williamson for making the event possible.
Thank you so much to all the students and staff who supported us - we hope you enjoyed your Halloween goodies!

Spirit - Junior School Sport
JSSATIS Athletics
JSSATIS Athletics will take place on Thursday 9 November, at the Domain Athletics Centre. Programs have now been distributed, with only a couple of training sessions left before we compete. This year, Fahan has shared responsibility for organising the event with three other schools. As such, we will be running the High Jump site and I would like to thank the many volunteers who will be assisting with this.
All Schools Athletics
Congratulations to Evie Essex, Milla Gorringe, Anna McCallum, Frankie Gorringe, Maggie Davies and Rosie Briggs who competed at the recent All Schools Athletics. By all reports the weather wasn’t as bad as it could have been, with all events able to be run and the girls producing some excellent performances. We will wait now for news of selection for the School Sport Australia Athletics, to be held in Launceston later this month.

Junior Touch Football
This roster has now commenced, with our three teams acquitting themselves well, with what is a tricky sport to learn. A big thank you goes to our coaches, Mark Playle and Luke Taylor.
Junior Cricket
The cricket roster has also commenced, with both training and game day on Mondays. Many thanks goes to Lindsay Ashlin and Mrs Steel for looking after this team.
Infant Sports Day
The Infant Sports Day will be held on Tuesday 28 November from 1:15pm to 2:50pm, on the Fahan School Oval. This is for Years Kinder to Year 2 and is a fun afternoon with a variety of running races and team games.
Students will need to bring a hat and drink, and appropriate additional clothing for a ‘late for school’ race eg. another jumper/polo shirt, track pants – something easy to put on quickly.
Parents are most welcome to attend.

Spirit - Senior School Sport
Term 4 sport began last week and it is great to see Fahan enter a large number of teams across the sports.
Tennis
Fahan has 7 teams in the Years 7 and 8 rosters and 4 teams in the Years 9 and 10 rosters. It is fantastic to see such strength in the number of students playing tennis. Tennis is a great sport to play for many reasons. It maintains and improves one's health, fitness, strength and agility. It also has social and psychological benefits where it can be played throughout life competitively or with friends and family as a social activity.
Touch Football
The Years 7/8 Touch Football teams began their roster last week and are already looking very strong, with the Navy team on top of the ladder at this stage. The Years 9/10 team played their first game this week and are keen to improve their skills and speed for next week.
Sailing
In Term 4, Fahan has two teams entered in the Teams Racing competition. Both teams sailed in their first races this week. All races are on a Wednesday afternoon at the Sandy Bay Sailing Club.
Rowing
All age groups have begun training and can be seen (and coaches heard!) out on the Derwent River each morning.
This weekend the Junior Rowers will be attending a training camp at Franklin River where they will spend many hours on smooth waters, practicing their technique and developing all aspects of their rowing.
We are looking forward to the regatta season beginning. Schools Regatta 1 is on Saturday 25 and Sunday 26 November at Lake Barrington. This is followed by the Junior Quad Scull Regatta for the U13s, U14s and U15s and will be held at New Norfolk on Saturday 9 December. The Open rowers will race the next day, Sunday 10 December, also at New Norfolk in the Ally Cashion 8’s and is an 8km race. We wish our rowers the very best for the season ahead.
Equestrian
On Sunday 5 November the Fahan Equestrian team will compete in the Inter Schools Horse Trials at Huntingfield Pony Club. Ruby Smith, Hannah Hardy and Sarah Reynolds are the Fahan representatives, and we wish them all the very best.
Athletics
Congratulations to all athletes who competed and represented Fahan in the Tasmanian All Schools Track and Field Championships at St Leonards Athletics Centre on Saturday 21 and Sunday 22 October. There were many excellent results and personal best efforts.
Place getters were:
Lucy Stoneman – 3rd in the U14 High Jump and 4th in the U14 Long Jump

Community - Hobart Children's Mayor
On Wednesday 25 October, two Year 6 students, Amelie Dobson and Caroline Senkbeil, attended the Hobart Town Hall for the annual Children’s Mayor Reception, held as part of National Children’s Week. This reception was hosted by the Hobart City Lord Mayor, Anna Reynolds, to celebrate the many ideas put forward by Hobart students with the aim of improving Hobart.
Students across Hobart were asked to come up with an idea and write a manifesto of what they would do if they were the Lord Mayor. After a Year 6 in-class presentation and voting process, Amelie and Caroline’s proposals were chosen as great ideas to share with the Hobart City Council. This allowed them the opportunity to send their manifestos to the Council, where elected members considered their submission.
During the formal reception, students were able to learn about the proposals put forward by students from other schools, enjoy a delicious morning tea and participate in a mock council meeting. During the mock council meeting, Amelie had the opportunity to put forward her idea of a ‘River Line’, which was ‘passed’ by her fellow ‘council members’.
The winning manifestos were also announced during the Reception. Caroline’s manifesto was awarded a High Commendation for her idea about a GPS system for Metro buses. She was able to present her idea in an excellent speech and she received a framed certificate and a special City of Hobart badge.
I liked the experience of the chamber and how there was a Mayor, a minute keeper, a CEO and council members and how we acted it out as a proper meeting. (Amelie)
I think I enjoyed most of all hearing children’s suggestions on how Hobart could be improved (Caroline)
Congratulations to Amelie and Caroline for their effort and enthusiasm for this program.
Mrs Kathryn Lumsden-Steel

As you are aware NAPLAN moved from May to March in 2023, and changes were made to reporting to provide simpler, clearer, and more meaningful results.
ACARA is keen to hear from principals and teachers, as well as parents and carers, on these changes.
Feedback will be captured via a survey from 9 October to early December 2023 and should take about 10 minutes to complete.
A link to the survey is here: https://www.surveymonkey.com/r/NRTZCHN.
